BREAKING: Federal judge nullifies Trump’s illegal IRS settlement and refers his lawyers to the bar to get disciplined.
All claims check out: the custom teller-window boxes, the $881 million laundered, the 175 charges shelved, the UK Chancellor's intervention, and the $1.92 billion settlement are all confirmed by DOJ records, the Senate subcommittee report, ICIJ reporting, and the 2016 congressional "Too Big to Jail" report. The "five weeks of profit" framing is a reasonable characterization given HSBC's scale at the time, so the caption is accurate as written.
Caption:
El Chapo's cartel had boxes custom built to fit HSBC's teller windows. Wider than standard. Made to move more drug cash, faster.
The bank processed it for years without raising a single flag.
HSBC admitted to laundering at least $881 million in Sinaloa Cartel proceeds through its US banking system between 2006 and 2010. Federal prosecutors drafted up to 175 criminal charges.
Every one was shelved. The UK's own Chancellor personally warned US regulators that prosecuting HSBC could destabilize the global financial system.
HSBC paid $1.92 billion, roughly five weeks of profit at the time, and walked away with no criminal conviction. El Chapo got life in a US supermax. His bank got a fine and a strongly worded agreement.
The lesson: scale doesn't just create profit, it creates leverage. Follow @business.moneyinspiration for the stories the headlines gloss over. Would you have prosecuted the bank?

A federal judge has approved a $30,000 settlement to resolve a civil rights lawsuit filed by an Iowa man who was unlawfully arrested while peacefully watching a sunrise. The incident occurred at Rand Park when Keokuk Police Department Officer Tanner Walden approached Logan Vincent Land, who was sitting on a park bench, following a welfare check report regarding an individual allegedly sleeping in the park. Bodycam footage of the confrontation shows Land awake and enjoying the scenic view. When Officer Walden aggressively demanded his identification, Land questioned the legal basis of the request and refused to comply, prompting officers to forcibly arrest him for interference with official acts.
The initial criminal charges against Land—which included a subsequent drug paraphernalia possession charge tacked on after police searched his belongings post-arrest—were promptly dismissed by the Lee County District Court. Land subsequently filed a federal lawsuit alleging Fourth Amendment violations for unreasonable search and seizure. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Pratt denied summary judgment for Officer Walden, ruling that the police interaction should have concluded the moment it became clear Land was not asleep or in need of emergency assistance. Under the finalized agreement, the City of Keokuk paid a $3,000 deductible while its insurance covered the remainder of the settlement, explicitly denying any liability or wrongdoing.
One courtroom victory did not end his fight.
After Abraham McDonald won more than $1 million in a racial discrimination lawsuit against his employer, he took the settlement check to his bank.
According to his lawsuit, bank employees questioned whether the check was legitimate and called the police. Although the check was valid, McDonald was detained. He later argued that he had been racially profiled during the incident.
McDonald sued the bank and won again, bringing renewed attention to questions about bias, equal treatment, and accountability.
The lesson is that justice does not always end with one case. Sometimes standing up for your rights means continuing the fight when new challenges arise.

A slogan ended in a $13 million settlement.
In 2014, Benjamin Careathers sued Red Bull over its famous slogan, "Red Bull gives you wings." The lawsuit did not claim that people literally expected to fly. Instead, it argued that the company's advertising overstated the drink's performance benefits compared with similar caffeinated beverages.
Red Bull denied any wrongdoing but agreed to a $13 million settlement, allowing eligible U.S. customers who bought the drink during the covered period to receive cash or free products. The case became a reminder that marketing claims can carry legal consequences when they cannot be supported with evidence.
The bigger lesson is that strong branding may capture attention, but long-term trust depends on what a company can actually prove.
Do you think companies should face stricter rules for advertising claims?

She doesn’t apply for the job. She hands them $4 million and then names her terms.
Madeline Matlock walks past security and tells a partner their $19 million settlement should be $23 million. She knows because opposing counsel updates his client over coffee between 8:15 and 8:25 every morning, and nobody notices a woman her age standing near enough to hear it.
That’s the move. The thing she’s supposed to be handicapped by is the thing that got her the information.
The invisibility is measurable, too. Neumark, Burn and Button sent over 40,000 job applications and tracked who got called back. Women aged 64 to 66 heard back 12 percent of the time. Women aged 29 to 31, 19 percent. Same applications, different assumptions.
Then she refuses the interview. An interview is a request to be evaluated. She’d already been evaluated by the four million sitting on the table.
Nobody argues with proof they can count.
What do people underestimate about you that quietly works in your favor?
