Say hello to Basil’s wild cousin- perilla aka shisho aka beefsteak plant. It’s used heavily in Asian cooking but I like to use it too since it likes to pop up in my yard.
It sort of tastes like the mixture between basil, mint, and anise. I like to dry it, blend it with salt, then use it in various dishes. It’s really good on rice 🍚

Shisho is a major staple Asian dishes for centuries is shiso.
Shiso leaf is also known as Japanese mint, Perilla or the beefstake plant. It is a popular herb in Asian countries, that has become more noticeable in the US though sushi dishes.
Many sushi restaurants use shiso leaf as decoration or wrapped around sushi. However, other Asian countries also use shiso in their recipes, not only Japan; but each country calls it differently even though it is the same plant.
Shiso has a unique and strong flavor, similar to mint or basil, and the leaf can either be green shiso or red shiso (it looks more like burgundy).
