Today is Soft Serve Day, and I have a sweet story for you from one of the most charming Dairy Queens I’ve ever visited.
You can find this historic store along Autoroute 20 in L'Île-Perrot, Quebec, and it couldn’t be in better hands.
Those hands belong to Jean-Francois Piché and his wife, Annick Mercier. They were hard at work one recent Sunday morning, tidying up ahead of the influx of customers that would soon be enjoying the crème glacée.
I visited the night before, too, and the place was a scene in the best sense, something out of “American Graffiti,” but, well, in Canada.
In the stillness of a Sunday morning, Jean-Francois, across the parking lot sweeping the grounds, noticed me taking pictures, and I quickly waved, introduced myself, and told him what I do.
We hit it off, and he soon was telling me the Dairy Queen's history. Founded in 1956, this store was bought by his dad 40 years ago, and Jean-Francois and Annick are now the owners.
In all that time, very little has changed.
Nobody, and I mean, nobody, wants any change here. Well, except for Dairy Queen corporate. Jean-Francois told me they wanted him to update the signage to the modern “swoosh” logo.
It took a village to back him up.
The town declared that this Dairy Queen was “patrimonial,” a revered symbol and gateway to this community, part of their collective heritage.
So Dairy Queen backed off, and we all get to enjoy this beautiful neon sign – and the ice cream, which they present here perfectly, curlicue on top, just like the neon cone that’s going nowhere.
Indeed, you see that neon sign flashing on Autoroute 20 from a distance, and you know you’re arriving someplace special. This DQ even celebrates the history of this town through informational panels placed outside the store.
For the over 10,000 people who live in this community, this Dairy Queen is a sign of home – and for the rest of us, it’s a home away from home. #retrologist
