Not every mark left by acne is actually a scar. ✨
Different types of acne scarring require completely different treatment strategies.
🧊 ICE-PICK SCARS
Deep, narrow scars that respond best to targeted treatments such as TCA CROSS or punch techniques.
◻️ BOXCAR SCARS
Defined, indented scars. Microneedling can remodel shallow boxcar scars, while corrective peels can improve superficial texture and pigmentation.
〰️ ROLLING SCARS
Broad depressions caused by tethering beneath the skin. Tethered scars may require subcision, followed by microneedling to remodel the texture.
⬆️ HYPERTROPHIC SCARS
Raised scar tissue caused by excess collagen. These require a completely different approach, including silicone, steroid injections, or vascular laser when red.
🔴 PIE
Red or pink vascular marks, not true scars. Think azelaic acid, niacinamide, Centella, barrier support, and vascular treatments when needed.
🟤 PIH
Brown pigment left after inflammation, not a true scar. Vitamin A, vitamin C, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, corrective peels, and microneedling can all play a role.
🩹 EXCORIATION
An injury caused by picking, not automatically a scar. Repair the barrier first, then address any remaining redness or pigmentation after the skin has healed.
The right treatment depends on the type of mark and the depth of the scar, not just what it looks like.
Save this as your acne-scar quick guide, and send it to someone treating every acne mark the same way. 🤍
