SLAB CLIMBING? Yes✅ or No❌
M1 from the finals 👊🇧🇬
I’ve been working on my slab climbing for a while and getting it done just a few seconds before the time runs out got me hyped as crazy😱🔥
In the time for observation I saw it is about precision and really trusting my feet but I wasn’t really sure what was I going to do after the 10 points zone🤔.
I did slipped two times before and had to rush it on my last attempt and somehow this time I managed to stand on the volume, it felt like a miracle 😂
This boulder later helped me with the overall result and winning the 2026 Boulder Nationals 🥇🇧🇬

Conquer the slab with style! 🧗♂️🔥 The @nival.climbing pants 👖 are designed for ultimate performance on the wall—offering flexibility, durability, and a sleek look. Perfect for technical slab climbing! Would you give them a try? 👀 #ClimbWithNival #SlabClimbing #GearUp
Stronger Toes = Stronger Climbing
The best slab climbers all have one thing in common: their toes are insanely strong relative to their bodyweight.
They can stand on terrible feet and it just… sticks.
When I was competing, I trained this directly, and it made a huge difference in my slab climbing. I went from V8 to V12 on slab in 4-Months and sent every slab in competition that next year, including the Boulder World Cup I did that season!
I basically just treated my toes like my fingers.
Same idea; lock in a joint angle, apply load, progressively overload it. Your toe flexors (FHL, FDL, and the intrinsic foot muscles) are what let you create tension in the toes/foot. If they’re weak, your foot collapses. If they’re strong, you can support your weight on bad holds.
I started with bodyweight repeaters on a small edge, then progressed to adding weight and holding a fixed position, just like adding weight to a hang.
You can either make footholds smaller (more specific but less controlled), or add weight to better holds (more consistent and easier to track), same as finger training. I also made sure to train different positions, straight toe, inside edge and slight rotation because that’s how we actually climb.
I always wear a very old (soft) version of the shoe I climb in most so that I don’t simply rely on the insole for support.
But just like fingers, this doesn’t transfer automatically. You still need to get on the wall, climb slab, and practice loading your feet with intent. Otherwise you just end up with strong toes you don’t know how to use.
AND OF COURSE… this is something you have to respect. Your toes aren’t used to this kind of loading, and you can absolutely irritate them if you rush it. You can injure your toe’s connective tissue if you push too hard; just like your fingers!
I built it up slowly, kept the volume low, focused on clean positions, and stopped before things got sloppy.
Share this with someone who dislikes slab… they might just have weak toes 😂

These last couple weeks I’ve been really thinking about what “I want/need to do (my calling)” vs “what I should do (what others expect me to do)”. And well it’s been a lot of calisthenics, a lot of slab climbing and a lot of time thinking about how to progress my business. I really found that in these last couple months I’ve been driven by the things I “should” be doing because a good person does this, an athlete acts in this way, a business needs to do this. If you’ve been following for a while you might know that this sounds exactly like some Sartrean “Mauvaise foi”, well because it is. Existentialism and selfhood is a continuous battle we can never forget that, how easy it is to be lulled into the rhythm of life. But once aware the you do feel that sense of nausea (sartrean), that anxiety (kierkegaardean) and all there is left to do is try to become whole again.

Anyone else? 😂
Swinging around like monkeys on overhangs or pulling funky moves on interesting terrain is what we live for, no fear of falling, completely in our element.
Enter- slab climbing 😂
The sheer panic on our faces in these clips really cracked us up. Technical balancy footwork is not our strongest style we are happy to admit.
What do you prefer? Steep, vert or slab?
Slab climbing isn’t about power — it’s about patience, balance, and trust.
It’s the art of staying calm when nothing feels secure. 😅
Here are a few things that can make a huge difference:
1️⃣ Trust your feet.
Good slab climbing starts with good footwork. Learn to smear and stand tall — the more you trust your shoes, the more the wall will trust you back.
2️⃣ Keep your hips close and your heels down.
On volumes or big features, drop your heels and let your weight sink into your shoes. It increases surface contact and stability.
👉 Bonus tip: look under your arm toward your next foothold — it helps you stay aligned over your feet and maintain balance as you shift weight.
3️⃣ Move slow and stay relaxed.
Slab isn’t a race. Every movement should be smooth and deliberate. Quick, jerky steps break friction — slow ones build confidence.
4️⃣ Use your hands for balance, not pulling.
Your upper body keeps you steady, not upward. Think of your hands like antennas — just there for touch and feedback.
5️⃣ Breathe and trust friction.
Sometimes it feels like magic, but friction is physics. Stay calm, press evenly, and believe in your shoes.
6️⃣ Be patient and persistent.
Everyone slips on slab — even the best. Every slide teaches you something about balance, movement, or trust.
During our last trip to Corsica with the @belgianrockclimbingteam
@florian_gourgue and I decided to try Storia d’Acqua è di Luna (7c, 220m), a line that we had spotted the very first time we laid our eyes on Teghie Lisce. Once on the wall, we couldn’t believe how beautiful this route is. It came with a good amount of surprises: a third pitch that was supposed to be 7a+ and actually was a sandbagged 7c, a dynamic move on a slab that reminded us European cup boulder problem, and above all, slab climbing like we’ve never done before.
🤩This incredibly compact granite offers very few handholds, and as for footholds, there aren’t any. Or perhaps there are infinite I guess it’s a matter of perspective.
Here’s some footage from my send go on the crux pitch. I didn’t know it was possible to slip off a foothold without hands and stay on the wall 😅 On our second day in the route, we both sent all the hard pitches but then bailed before the last 3 easy ones cause it took us way too long and we had no sunshine left.
A huge thanks to the team for this amazing trip ☺️

💁♂️ are you the type to send every boulder in a colour circuit before moving on to the next grade?
💪 or do you prefer trying the hardest climbs in the gym that match your strengths?
🟣 challenge yourself with trying every climb of a colour next time you’re in the Haus — you might surprise yourself with some moves you wouldn’t have otherwise tried, or discover a new found love for slab climbing! 😬

If at first you don't succeed...slab harder 😉✨
We think slab climbing is all about that try, try, try until you send it! Do you agree?

One of the 7B boulders from my trip to Finland. Now continuing my normal training, so lots of slab climbing, with a focus on technique and of course front lever.🤗💪🔥🧗
