5 ways chronic stress can show up in your bedtime routine: Follow @emotionsandus for more emotional insights Comment “sleep” if you would like me to send you a free somatic guide, for better sleep hygiene 1. You need background noise to finally relax. Silence feels too loud because your nervous system is still on alert. 2. You can’t “switch off” your brain. A TV, fan, or podcast gives your mind something predictable to focus on instead of racing thoughts. 3. You don’t like falling asleep in complete silence. Your nervous system may have learned that constant input feels safer than stillness. 4. You wake up when the noise stops. The sudden quiet can pull your brain back into alert mode before you’re fully rested. 5. Sleep feels more like shutting down than settling down. Even when you’re exhausted, your body struggles to truly feel safe enough to rest.
On paper she was doing everything right: a real calorie deficit, eight hours of sleep, six months of iron. In reality the weight wouldn’t move, she woke up wrecked, and her ferritin hadn’t budged. Her doctor saw an 18, said «normal starts at 12,» and sent her home. But a woman’s body doesn’t wait for anemia to react. Below a ferritin of about 60 it flips into survival mode, and survival mode rewrites everything: → Metabolism throttles down — the body reads low iron as famine and hoards every calorie, so the deficit stops working. → Sleep stops restoring — mitochondria need iron to move oxygen, so eight hours buys almost nothing. → Iron won’t absorb — a gut stuck in scarcity isn’t primed to take it in, so the pills pass through. → Cortisol climbs to cover the gap, parking weight in place even while she under-eats. Three months on the real protocol, not drips: → Ferritin up to 70 by clearing the absorption blocks — coffee, dairy, and phytates moved off her iron meals → Gut inflammation treated so hepcidin stopped hoarding the iron she swallowed → Weight down 6 kg with no change to her diet → Sleep repaired by week three, cravings gone by week four «Normal from 12» is how a woman loses years to a fixable number. Below 60, the body is already rationing — and no deficit beats a tank running near empty. — Eight hours of sleep, and you wake up wrecked. Dark by ten, up at six, still hit by a truck. It’s not laziness or bad sleep hygiene. It’s a tank too empty for your cells to make energy from. I put it all in one book — 🩸 THE FERRITIN GAP: Exhausted, Freezing, Losing Hair — but «You’re Fine» → Why 10–12 gets called «normal» when it isn’t — and where you actually stand → Why the number won’t move: coming in, absorbing, or leaking — find your one leak → The exact doses, timing and blockers (coffee, tea, calcium) that finally move it → Tests to ask by name, scripts for every «you’re fine,» and how to order labs yourself Grab the digital book FERRITIN through the link in my bio.

#Drduck Referencias: • Windred DP, et al. Psychologists say: children with ADHD who were allowed to sleep in their parents' bed may develop a trait later in life that hardly anyone expects. The trait is not dependency. It is not poor sleep hygiene. It is not an inability to self-soothe — though that is the concern most parents carry when they allow the child into the bed in the first place. The trait is the capacity for secure attachment in adult relationships. Here is what the research on co-sleeping in ADHD children suggests. The ADHD nervous system has significantly greater difficulty with overnight regulation than a neurotypical one. The transition to sleep — already taxing for an ADHD brain — is further complicated by the hypervigilance that characterises the ADHD nervous system at rest. Proximity to a regulated caregiver acts as a co-regulation mechanism. The calm nervous system of the sleeping parent communicates safety to the child's nervous system — not through words, not through conscious interaction, but through the basic biological signals of warmth, breath, and heartbeat. The child who is allowed this proximity — who is not shamed for needing it, who is not told that needing closeness at night is babyish or wrong — internalises something specific: that needing people is not a weakness. That the desire for closeness is not pathological. That asking for what you need — even in the middle of the night — is permitted. That internalised permission is what follows the child into adulthood. Into every relationship where they will need to decide whether it is safe to need someone. Into every moment where vulnerability is required and shame could silence it instead. The ADHD adult who grew up being shamed for needing closeness does not stop needing it. They stop asking for it. And the cost of that silence is paid across decades. 💛 Everything in this post is covered in depth in the book I wrote for parents of children with ADHD. You slept 9 hours. So why do you still wake up exhausted? If you’ve been told “your labs are normal” but you still wake up feeling drained every morning, keep reading. You might have hypermobility. I hear this from my hypermobile patients almost every day. Here’s what most people don’t realize. Sleep does not automatically restore what instability demands from your body throughout the day. In people with hypermobility, muscles often have to work harder to stabilize joints because passive connective tissue support may be reduced. Even during sleep, pain, joint instability, frequent position changes, or muscle guarding may contribute to fragmented or less restorative sleep for some patients. Think about shoulders that feel unstable in certain positions. Hips that become uncomfortable when you roll over. A neck that never quite feels supported by the pillow. Your body may continue responding to these stresses throughout the night, making it harder to wake up feeling truly refreshed. Then there’s the nervous system. Many people with hypermobility also experience nervous system dysregulation. After spending an entire day working harder to stabilize the body, your nervous system may not fully shift into a restorative state during sleep. Add chronic pain, autonomic dysfunction such as POTS, or other sleep disturbances, and waking up exhausted becomes much easier to understand. This is why 9 hours in bed does not always equal 9 hours of restoration. The clock says you slept. Your body may still be recovering. That’s also why improving daytime stability, building muscular support, managing pain, addressing nervous system regulation, and treating underlying sleep disorders often has a greater impact than focusing on sleep hygiene alone. I’m Dr. Pooja Chopra, double board certified in PM&R and Pain Medicine. I care for many patients with hypermobility and EDS, and one of the biggest goals is helping them not only move better, but finally feel rested again. ⚠️ Disclaimer: This post is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. High cortisol levels can significantly disrupt your sleep cycle and body recovery. When stress hormones stay elevated at night, your nervous system remains on high alert, preventing deep and restorative rest. Common signs of high cortisol sleep include: * Doom-scrolling before bed * Waking up suddenly between 3 AM and 4 AM * Taking multiple trips to the bathroom at night * Grinding your teeth during sleep * Needing background noise to fall asleep * Feeling exhausted even after 8 hours of sleep * Involuntary body jerking or twitching before sleep * Sleeping in a tight fetal position or clutching a pillow hard Regulating your nervous system through physical therapy, posture management, and routine stress-relief techniques can help lower evening cortisol levels. Prioritize your sleep schedule to protect your physical longevity and mental sharpness every single day. . Sleeping at 9 PM can help you stay young, while heading to bed by 10 PM makes your brain smart. . Delaying rest until 11 PM makes your hair fall quickly and increases unwanted stress on the body. . Pushing your bedtime to 12 AM disrupts your metabolism and makes weight gain incredibly easy over time. . Staying awake until 1 AM severely compromises your system, acting like drinking poison slowly for your long-term health. . #sleephealth #sleepdeprivation #healthylifestyle #wellnesseducation #insomniarecovery . sleep hygiene, sleep schedule effects, health risks
You can say goodbye to sleep if you have a cortisol hormone imbalance 👋 🤔Ready to naturally optimize your cortisol and the 5 hormones throwing it off ⬇️ 💬Comment or DM me "BALANCE" for a Iink to my Complete Hormone Balancing Blueprint designed for busy women ✅ Bad sleep isn't always about screen time or caffeine. Sometimes the body is stuck in a stress response even while you're asleep, and it shows up in ways that have nothing to do with typical sleep hygiene advice. This covers the physical and behavioral patterns that tend to show up when high cortisol is behind the sleep problems: things like grinding teeth, needing background noise just to fall asleep. Cortisol imbalance affects 1 in 3 women in the US, UK, Canada and Europe. Waking at the exact same time every night, or curling into a defensive position without even realizing it. #highcortisol #cortisolimbalance #balancehormonal #hormonebalance #hormonehealing
