Have you heard the newssss?🐍 Nine baby Eastern massasauga rattlesnakes were born at Regenstein Small Mammal-Reptile House. Endangered and often misunderstood, these little rattlers mark a big conservation milestone as Lincoln Park Zoo works alongside state and national authorities to protect this endangered species.

🎶 “Snakes in the grass…” — and yes, they’re out here.
With warmer weather, rattlesnake encounters become more common across our local trails and waterways. Knowing what to do before you head out can make all the difference.
If someone is bitten by a rattlesnake:
🚨 Call 911 immediately and seek medical attention
🧍 Keep the person still and calm — movement spreads venom
⬇️ Keep the bite area lower than heart level
🛑 Keep the injured area motionless
🧥 Keep the victim warm and at rest
🩹 Cover the bite with a clean, dry dressing
🚫 Do not give food or drinks
Do NOT:
❌ Wait for symptoms
❌ Use a tourniquet
❌ Cut the wound
❌ Try to suck out venom
❌ Apply ice or soak in water
❌ Use alcohol or caffeine
Most importantly: Know Before You Go. Stay aware of your surroundings, stick to trails, and give wildlife space.
Rattlesnakes play an important role in our ecosystem—but like all wildlife, they deserve respect and distance.
