✨This week #UEAOutreach welcomed 280 students from schools across the region to our annual Wonderfest 2022 Event. The main aim of our event is to expose students to subjects beyond what they’ve experienced at school, to help guide them with making decisions about what they want to do after GCSE’s. Subject tasters were linked to one of four themes: Out of This World, Power for the Future, Sharing is Caring and Power for the Future. Students took part in 2 different subject sessions in the day, from Engineering to Pharmacy, Creative Writing to Computer Science, we offered 16 subject sessions for them to explore! Each group was supported by a student ambassador. The student ambassadors said they thoroughly enjoyed working with their groups and were incredibly impressed by the students curiosity for the subjects they were discovering. In your country today, does the social ladder still exist? I’m currently in Brazil, and an Argentine friend told me something striking: “Brazil barely has a social ladder anymore.” I’m curious how Brazilians see this. In my memoir Windows and Walls, I shared my own journey — from a small mountain village in China, to studying in Beijing, to becoming an entrepreneur. China’s tech boom gave many ordinary people real opportunities. Founders of companies like Alibaba and ByteDance came from non-elite backgrounds. Even in the AI era, some new founders still do.
