Amid allegations of misusing taxpayer money, Newcap has decided to close its doors immediately and started informing employees Tuesday morning they no longer have a job.
In a press release, it states, “With deep sadness, Newcap announced that it will be closing its doors after extensive efforts to remain operational.”
It’s unclear how many people Newcap currently employs, but earlier this year former CEO Cheryl Detrick told FOX 11 the organization employed about 100 people between seven office locations in its 10-county service area.
Newcap has been assisting low-income individuals for more than 60 years with things like housing, home weatherization, and health care.
The most recent independent audit for Newcap shows it has been operating at a $2 million deficit. It received $13.9 million in government grants in 2024.
Former employees have alleged the taxpayer money has often been shifted from its intended uses, was used to help pay large executive salaries, and cover expenses for excessive trips to conferences.
Detrick has denied those claims, saying strict government rules were followed with any grant money the organization receives.
FOX 11 Investigates has been airing in depth stories about the allegations since Feb. 9. Newcap’s board of directors put Detrick on administrative leave a few days after our first story and announced her official departure about a month later.
State Rep. David Steffen, R-Howard, revealed Monday night at a town hall gathering that he is filing a formal request with the state Department of Justice to launch a criminal investigation.
FOX 11 has learned Newcap’s decision to close was made before Steffen announced his intention.
Lawmakers from both sides have called for audits and reviews of Newcap on the state and federal levels.
