Social workers are valuable members of EVERY team. May we treat them like it. Sometimes in professional settings social workers can be treated as irrelevant or lacking value. We're helping professionals, not doormats. We get thrown situations expecting to fix what another on our team has neglected, often without consideration of our time. It's a particularly confusing dichotomy when we're all committed to caring well for clients and then treat one another poorly behind closed doors. Some days at work can feel like high school all over again, leaving us dazed and confused at how this is real life. Overlooked or given a microaggression about our career choice. My hope is that entitled behaviors can cease in the workplace and we can find a common ground that we all care for our clients in a meaningful way, even when our training, education, and experience may differ šŸ’• What an honor to work with so many colleagues who see the value of our work, get curious about our profession, and allow us to work together on supporting our clients. All content is for educational and entertainment purposes only and never a substitute for therapy.
Social workers are often expected to bridge the gap between what someone needs and what the system actually provides. When housing doesn’t exist, treatment beds aren’t available or waitlists stretch for years, it’s easy to start wondering whether you should have advocated harder, tried another referral or somehow done more. Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of skill. Sometimes you’ve reached the limits of what is actually available. Knowing the difference can change how we understand the weight frontline workers carry.
The Lindsay Clancy case has a lot of therapists and social workers looking at their documentation a little differently. šŸ‘€ Because your notes aren’t just paperwork. They should clearly reflect what you assessed, what you observed, what you did, and why. If writing strong clinical notes has you second-guessing every sentence, I created the 104+ page Copy-Paste Clinical Notes Toolkit to help. Comment NOTES and I’ll send you the link. šŸ“ #socialwork #clinicalnotes #lcsw #lmft #lpc
As pediatric therapists, social workers, child and youth workers, and school psychologists, we have the privilege of walking alongside children and families through some of the hardest moments of their lives. We witness grief, trauma, crisis, loss, fear, and heartbreak. We sit with children carrying burdens that no child should have to carry. We help families navigate situations they never imagined they would face. Yet what stays with us most is not only the pain. It’s the resilience. It’s the child who keeps showing up. The teen who agrees to one more safety plan. The family that finds a way forward after unimaginable loss. The moments of courage, connection, and hope that emerge even in the darkest circumstances. Working in pediatric therapy changes your perspective. It reminds you how deeply children feel, how much families carry, and how important it is that no one has to face these challenges alone. ā¤ļø To our fellow pediatric therapists, social workers, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, behaviour therapists, child and youth workers, and mental health professionals: thank you for the work you do every day. A message for any parent working with a social worker šŸ¤ I’d really like to help shift the narrative we see of social workers online as I truly believe this role exists to support, not scare. Social workers aren’t here to judge or catch you out. We’re here to help keep children safe, strengthen families, and work with you, not against you. When there’s honesty, communication, and a willingness to work together, real positive change can happen. And to the social workers out there supporting children and families every day, keep going. It’s not easy, but the work you do matters. Remember why you started šŸ¤
Social work is not ā€œdoing things for people.ā€ It’s doing everything possible to help people do things for themselves. At its core, social work is built on autonomy, dignity, and self-determination. We are trained to support people in identifying goals, building motivation, and moving through change at a pace that is realistic for them; not for us, and not for the system. A huge part of practice is understanding stages of change, meeting people where they are, and recognizing that sustainable change cannot be forced or outsourced. We emphasize accountability and personal responsibility in every intervention. Not in a punitive way, but in a way that respects people as agents in their own lives. The goal is never to replace someone’s decision-making, it is to strengthen it. And importantly, we only take over tasks or decision-making when someone is truly incapacitated and cannot safely act on their own. That is not the norm of social work practice! It is the exception, guided by safety, ethics, and capacity. What often gets missed in public conversation is that social workers are not sitting in rooms trying to decide how to take over people’s lives. We are sitting in systems trying to help people navigate them while preserving as much of the individual’s independence and control as possible. So when social workers talk about systemic barriers, it is not because we don’t believe in responsibility or effort. It’s because we see, repeatedly and across settings, people who are trying (actively, imperfectly, and often under extreme stress) running into systems that are fragmented, under-resourced, or simply not designed to support real human complexity. We don’t primarily see ā€œlack of responsibility.ā€ We see mismatch. Between what people need and what systems are able to provide. And over time, that mismatch stops looking like individual failure and starts looking like a pattern that deserves attention. #systemsnotsymptoms #socialwork #socialjustice #publichealthmatters #stagesofchange
As the school year gets underway, I sat down with social workers to hear more about the work they’re doing to stand up for our students, educators, and communities. Ā  Glad to share some of the work my team and I have been doing and learn more about ways we can help Delawareans thrive.
