Sol LeWitt believed that the most beautiful part of art was the idea.. not the execution.
His wall drawings became living systems of thought, recreated by others, yet always his own.

Would you rescue a masterpiece if it was heading straight to the trash container or is taking it a crime against art history? In 1999 at the KW Berlin an incredible event took place that changed the perspective on contemporary art when the exhibition of legendary conceptual artist Sol LeWitt ended and workers literally started throwing his famous sculpture Cube Without A Corner into the dumpster. Sebastian Bieniek couldn’t believe his eyes and decided to intercept the workers to rescue the artwork turning this daring act of salvation into his own legendary conceptual art campaign known as Recycling Sol LeWitt. This mind-blowing moment raises a massive question for the modern art community about institutional critique and whether a discarded masterpiece stops being art when the museum throws it away or if saving it actually creates a brand new artistic concept. Let me know in the comments if you think this was pure theft or the ultimate genius form of contemporary art and make sure to share this insane art history secret with a friend who loves modern art stories! #SebastianBieniek #SolLeWitt #ConceptualArt #ArtHistory #BerlinArtScene ContemporaryArt ArtReels ModernArt InstitutionalCritique ArtScandal

Back from an exhibition and now returning to the archive: Sol LeWitt’s Arcs and Bands in Colors 1 and 2 is back in the gallery – carefully unframed and re-entered into our collection.
Sol LeWitt was known for strict grids and rules. Lincoln Center Print breaks them. Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Lacie Barbour tells us about one of the pieces she feels especially stands out in “Beautiful Ideas: The Prints of Sol LeWitt.”

Sol LeWitt is a key figure in the transition from Minimalism to Conceptual Art.
Reducing the work to its essentials, he conceives art as a set of instructions to be carried out: an idea that finds full expression in his Wall Drawings, begun in 1968.
Designed to adapt to ever-changing walls and destined to be erased at the end of the exhibition, these works redefine the very concept of ownership and conservation.
Entrusted to those who follow the artist’s instructions, the Wall Drawings take on a unique form each time. In “Arcs from Four Corners (Wall Drawing #133)”, pencil arcs expand from the four corners of the wall to occupy the entire surface, creating a design that changes with the space and the interpretation of the executor.

Sol Lewitt nailed it when he said: “The narrative of serial art works more like music than like literature.”
This show of prints @paceprints is the embodied of that quote. ❤️💙💛💚

Final show at @okeydokey_konradfischer on Western Avenue, and they’re closing with something really special. Sol LeWitt and @david_douard, separated by generations, but genuinely in conversation in here. LeWitt first showed with Konrad Fischer in 1968. Douard joined in 2023. Standing in front of Wall Drawing #869 alongside Douard’s sculptures, that gap disappears. Two artists who share a language but speak it completely differently. What a note to go out on.
