137/365 it’s always a great day to get back into the gym during a massive solar storm
Gotta love our magnetic field 🫶
When the Sun unleashes a solar storm, a violent wave of radiation and charged particles barrels straight toward us. If Earth were defenseless, this blast would completely strip our atmosphere.
Instead, our magnetosphere deflects the vast majority of the storm entirely, forcing the solar wind to slide right past the planet and out into deep space.
Only a tiny fraction of those charged particles manage to leak through. Earth’s magnetic field channels this small percentage down toward the poles, where they collide with our atmosphere and ignite the sky.
The auroras you see from orbit aren’t just pretty lights. They are the visible friction of a shield under fire.

A massive solar storm is unfolding above us.
Could these cosmic forces be influencing the oceans, the waves and even the Earth beneath our feet?
Perhaps we've only begun to understand the intimate relationship between our Sun and our planet.
The universe is far more connected than we've been taught.

We should get ready for a big solar storm.
In 1859, the sun released a blast of energy toward Earth.
When it arrived, telegraph machines sparked and the Northern Lights were visible as far as the tropics. The bizarrely dark-red aurora made people think that cities were on fire.
It was the largest geomagnetic storm ever recorded, but it probably won’t be the last. We should prepare for one soon…

A massive solar storm is heading toward Earth, threatening to disrupt communications, navigation systems, and power grids around the world. NASA issued the warning after a powerful burst of energy from the sun last week, which measured as an X2.7-class solar flare, the highest category for solar flares. These flares can last from a few minutes to several hours. The flare has already caused radio blackouts across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, along with some power degradation in the eastern US. NASA warned that more is to come, saying the bursts could continue to impact 'radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts'. 🌞 The Carrington Event (1859) In 1859,
Earth was hit by the strongest solar storm ever recorded. A massive explosion from the Sun reached Earth in just 17.6 hours.
Auroras were so bright people could read newspapers at night. Telegraph systems failed, shocked operators, and even caught fire.
If this happened today, satellites, power grids, and the internet could go down. ⚡🌍 💬
Do you think modern technology would survive a Carrington-level storm?
🇺🇸 Most people will be watching fireworks this Fourth of July.
But the Sun may put on its own show.
After unleashing 10 solar flares in just 24 hours, the Sun sent multiple bursts of charged plasma toward Earth. Forecasters are now tracking a geomagnetic storm that could push the northern lights much farther south than normal this holiday weekend.
If skies stay dark and clear, parts of the northern United States could have a chance to see the aurora.
No one can guarantee where it will appear or how bright it will be, but if conditions come together, this could be one of the most memorable Fourth of July skies in years.
Would you rather watch fireworks… or see the northern lights?

Solar storm is a powerful disturbance in space caused by intense activity on the Sun. The most dangerous events are coronal mass ejections (CMEs) huge clouds of magnetized plasma thrown into space. If a CME is directed toward Earth, it can collide with our planet’s magnetic field and trigger a geomagnetic storm.
One of the most famous examples occurred in 1859. Known as the Carrington Event, it was an exceptionally powerful solar storm that produced brilliant auroras at unusually low latitudes and severely disrupted telegraph systems. Some telegraph operators reported sparks and electrical shocks, while equipment was damaged or caught fire. At that time, humanity had very little technology dependent on electricity, so the consequences were relatively limited.
More than 150 years later, we experienced a frightening near-miss. On 23 July 2012, the Sun launched an extremely powerful CME that crossed Earth's orbital path. Fortunately, Earth was not there when it arrived. Scientists concluded that a direct hit could have produced a severe geomagnetic storm, potentially comparable to the Carrington Event.
Today, such an event could be far more disruptive. A major solar storm could interfere with satellites, GPS, radio communications, aviation systems and electrical power grids. It can also produce spectacular auroras far beyond their usual polar regions.
The Sun is 150 million kilometres away, yet a single eruption from it can reach across space and disturb the technological systems upon which modern civilization depends. The Carrington Event showed us what the Sun is capable of, and the 2012 near-miss reminded us that another major storm could happen again.

Although the solar storm is expected to begin early Wednesday afternoon, it'll last through Thursday evening (maybe longer). This could be as strong as what we experienced back in May. Stay tuned for updates on the timing and strength of this solar storm.
Look up tonight, parts of India may witness a rare glow in the sky.
A strong eruption from the Sun has sent a huge cloud of charged particles racing towards Earth. NASA and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center say Earth is under a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch, with a small chance of reaching G4 (severe) levels.
What’s happening?
The Sun has released a powerful burst called a solar storm, sending charged particles towards Earth.
What happens when it arrives?
When these particles hit Earth’s magnetic field, they disturb it. This creates a geomagnetic storm.
Why do we see colourful lights?
These particles collide with gases high in the atmosphere and release light.
That glow is called auroras or Northern Lights.
Why India might see it?
Auroras usually stay near the poles. But a very strong storm can push them further south, giving northern India a rare chance of a faint glow.
Where to look in India:
• Hanle and parts of Ladakh
• Higher regions of Uttarakhand
• Parts of Himachal Pradesh
• Some areas of Kashmir
When to watch
11:30 PM – 2:30 AM IST (peak window)
A rare space-weather moment where the Sun might briefly light up India’s northern sky, and for a few hours, even the darkest sky might quietly glow.
