Friends, is it true that pregnant women have no business with zobo drink? I really wanted some while I was pregnant but one of my colleagues warned me against it. She said something about it causing miscarriage. Is it true?

Do you grow red sorrel? This hardy perennial green really comes into its own in late autumn. The elongated leaves are bright green with raspberry red veins - gorgeous! We don’t eat a whole salad of the leaves as the lemony flavour is quite strong. Instead we add them to mixed green salads, as well as sandwiches and wraps. You can also use it to make sorrel soup, sauté the greens or chop some into rice. So many uses for this unique green! I’ve got two big clumps in the veggie garden and it’s time to cover them up for winter harvesting. What’s your go-to way to enjoy sorrel?

Rose and Nicolas loved their favourite Caribbean sorrel drink so much, the siblings decided to create a sorrel stand with the assistance of their parents. Their Sweet Sorrel Stand was a success in the neighbourhood. The main ingredient of the drink is the Roselle plant (Sorrel), a species of hibiscus which is native to West Africa. The red flower buds are boiled, strained, sweetened with sugar, with a touch of ginger, cinnamon, orange peel and cloves. Once cooled for a couple of hours or overnight, it is served with ice. It is known to be very rich in antioxidants. Traditionally, this drink is served during Christmas holidays. On a hot summer day, it is a refreshing alternative to lemonade.

We all already know that soul food is where it’s at. Yet, health officials are still out here telling us our food is bad for us. If that’s the case, then why is this happening with our staple foods? #PushBlack #BlackHistory #CollardGreens #HibiscusTea #Sorrel #Yams

🥭 Look for various fruit nectars to pair with tartness of sorrel (aka. hibiscus) to make a super refreshing summer drink. Here I use Mango, but there’s an entire world of fruit nectar to experiment with when the fruit you want to experience is not in season. Nectars are your next-best option. They’re basically fruit puré, water, and sugar.
👨🏻🍳 Brew a huge pot of sorrel in water then let it cool, the same way you would do for making iced tea.
👨🏻🍳 Nectars are really thick, so they need to be thinned out with another liquid and they’re already sweetened with natural sugars. Some brands contain high fructose corn syrup, so be sure to check the ingredients label and steer clear of them. My favorite (and recommended) brand of nectar is Mira but it’s hard to find at the moment, so my next favorite is Goya (shown here).
🫚 Add some freshly grated ginger to your liking. It just gives it a spicy kick and added health benefits.
