This 7-week-old Spectacled Owl is still in its juvenile stage🦉Full grown in size but covered in soft down feathers that provide insulation and protection. These feathers will gradually be replaced by adult plumage over the coming months. A small window in a much larger story of growth, and one of the many transformations we have the privilege to witness up close. Visit our Center to see the owl chicks. Shortly after Great Horned Owl nestling 26-59 arrived, at only a few days old, we received 26-72, another Great Horned Owl nestling of a similar age. 26-72 came to us from the Antelope Valley Country Club. Both nestlings had been found on the ground after falling from a nest and sustaining head trauma. Young raptors do best when they can grow up alongside others of their own species. Even at a very young age, baby Great Horned Owls benefit from having another owlet nearby. Being raised with other young owls helps them learn species-appropriate behaviors, supports healthy social development, and helps prevent imprinting or habituation. That is why we always try to place young raptors with others of a similar age whenever possible. Now, these two little ones are foster siblings, growing side by side in one of our incubators, where they will remain until they are old enough to self-feed. From there, they will move together into larger indoor caging, then into an outdoor enclosure as they continue to grow and develop. As they mature, they will gradually transition into larger spaces until they are ready for our large Great Horned Owl flight, where they can build the flight strength and hunting skills they will need for life in the wild. Please donate to help care for the hundreds of young raptors that we will care for this nesting season. 🦉POV: You’re releasing a barred owl back into the wild. The Forest Preserves bands about 70 different bird species every year, including barred owls. Wildlife staff checked this one for disease and take blood and tissue samples before sending it on its way.
Our beautiful Verreaux's Eagle-Owl Tolkien is back on the flying team! 💚🦉 After a break from displays Tolkien is back with his signature low flights and rumbling deep hoot. He's been making some appearances in our winter flying display ahead of our summer season! Pre-book your next visit to see Tolkien in action by clicking the link in our bio 👆
Sasha our magnificent Eurasian Eagle Owl is showing off his magnificent plumicorns. These wonderful feathers on top of his head break up his outline as a form of camouflage. As we are in the breeding season for many of our birds, we start to see behaviours that don’t occur at other times of the year. Sasha has created a scrape (a shallow bowl in the floor into which a female would lay her eggs) and can be heard hooting to staff members as they pass by!
We received an even tinier Barred Owl yesterday, with the same exact story as our other two owlets; his tree was cut down, and he took a tumble with it. We urge homeowners, if possible, to wait on clearing dead trees until the fall. Cavity nesters such as Barred Owls call these trees nurseries for their hatchlings. #owls #raptors #birdsofprey #wildlife #wildliferehabilitation
🦉 Baby Barred Owl (Owlet) Barred Owl babies—called owlets—are some of the fluffiest, most expressive young raptors you’ll come across. Owlets leave the nest before they can fly and spend their time hopping around and climbing nearby trees 🦉 This stage is completely normal and is called “branching.” Even if you see them on the ground, they are not usually abandoned—parents are close by, still feeding and watching over them. This little guy was found in the road, so we brought him in for a wellness check, we will return him to his parents in a safer location. #BarredOwl #Owlet #BabyOwl #BranchingStage #WildlifeRehab RaptorRehab KeepWildlifeWild WildlifeEducation WildlifeRescue BirdRehab BirdsOfPrey NatureEducation RespectWildlife
We just finished our first Instagram live, and I noticed George was particularly focused on something, but it took me a minute to figure it out. He was having a staring contest with himself. Idk who won. #owls #owlstagram #owlsofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #raptoreducation
This nest box had 8 barn owl chicks, all different ages. This is normal for barn owls, who lay each egg a few days apart so they can hatch at different times. The older chicks are defending their nest by hissing and clapping their bill at me, something adults do as well as a defense mechanism! Can you tell which one is the youngest? 🍼 Our team of experienced biologists take the utmost care to ensure every bird’s safety and health is a top priority in our work. Our team was granted permission to study American barn owls via a permit from the CDFW, USGS, and UC Davis IACUC. This work is supported in part by The National Geographic Society @insidenatgeo. • • • • • #NatGeoExplorer #barnowl #birds #ornithology #nestbox
