St. Louis County Executive Sam Page came into office after his predecessor, Steve Stenger, resigned amid legal trouble.
Now, the Democratic chief executive is facing legal hot water of his own. A St. Louis County grand jury indicted Page on two misdemeanor election offenses and two counts of felony theft “by deceit” over the spending of county money. At issue is a mailer Page’s office sent out with public money that his detractors say was aimed at torpedoing Proposition B,
Page has said the mailer was for educational purposes only and didn’t advocate a position. But his detractors say it was clearly aimed at defeating Proposition B, an unsuccessful April ballot initiative that would have allowed the county council to fire department heads with five out of seven votes.
“When I saw the mailers that came out, I was astonished,” said Councilwoman Gretchen Bangert, D-Florissant.
But there are some big differences between Page and Stenger’s legal predicaments. Federal prosecutors charged Stenger on bribery charges, and the evidence was so strong against the Democratic official that he ultimately pleaded guilty. Attorney General Andrew Bailey is handling Page’s case. And some legal experts have doubts that Page violated state laws against using public money for political campaigns.
And another key divergence is even Page’s most fervent critics are waiting for the legal process to play out before calling for his resignation. Stenger stepped down hours after his indictment was made public.
“What we want to do is we want to continue on with the work of St Louis County government,” said Councilman Mike Archer, R-St. Louis County. “And he gets arraigned on August 29 and I would fully expect him to enter a plea of not guilty and waive his formal arraignment, and then we just continue on.”
