[Director's Message] MMCA — Nam June Paik Effect: Archiving the Visionary 비디오 아트의 거장, 그 위대한 유산을 대중의 언어로 기록하다 이번 [백남준 효과] 전시 영상 프로젝트의 핵심 과제는 거장의 난해할 수 있는 예술 세계를 전 국민이 직관적이고 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 시각 언어로 구현하는 것이었습니다. 우리는 기술적으로 매우 정교한 접근을 시도했습니다. 아날로그 브라운관 특유의 주사율 차이로 발생하는 플리커(Flicker, 화면 깜빡임) 현상을 완벽히 제어하여 시각적 편안함을 제공하고, 전시장 내부의 네온사인 색감과 질감을 현장의 분위기 그대로 화면에 재현하는 데 주력했습니다. 특히 과천 국립현대미술관 중앙 홀의 탁 트인 구조를 활용하여, 압도적인 공간감과 함께 전시의 맥락을 입체적으로 이해할 수 있도록 카메라의 동선과 구도를 설계했습니다. 거장의 유산이 현대의 공간 속에서 어떻게 호흡하는지, 그 현장감을 영상으로 전하고자 했습니다. The core mission for the [Nam June Paik Effect] project was to translate the master’s profound artistic world into a visual language intuitive enough for the general public to understand easily. We took a highly sophisticated technical approach. We perfectly controlled the 'flicker' phenomenon—caused by the refresh rate differences of analog CRT monitors—to ensure visual comfort. Furthermore, we focused on reproducing the colors and textures of the neon signs exactly as they appeared on-site, capturing the authentic atmosphere of the exhibition. By utilizing the open architectural structure of the MMCA Gwacheon central hall, we designed camera movements and compositions to allow viewers to experience the overwhelming sense of space and the context of the exhibition dimensionally. Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was a groundbreaking artist widely regarded as the founder of video art and one of the most influential figures in global contemporary art. Born in Seoul and educated in Japan and Germany, Paik emerged from the experimental Fluxus movement in the 1960s, challenging conventional boundaries between music, performance, technology, and visual art. In conversation with curator Yoon-Jee Choi (@yoong_choi), the artist reveals how he moves beyond photographic likeness to create what she calls a “panoramic mind-picture.” By compressing the grandeur of nature into energetic, intentional brushwork, Park translates the physical mass of a mountain into a singular emotional encounter, where the memory of the landscape is just as vital as the view itself.
