See it, say it, hear it, feel it. That's how kids actually learn morphology. Watching a suffix change a word in front of you is so much more powerful than being told about it. Thanks Miss Truong for this one! #morphology #vocabulary #structuredliteracy #teachersofaustralia #sentencescience
When schwa makes -ant and -ent sound alike, spelling can feel like a guessing game. But there are clues! These generalizations have exceptions, but they give students a helpful starting point for spelling many common words. Phonics goes SO far beyond 26 letters and sounds. One of the biggest mindset shifts I see students needing to make in 1st grade is understanding that groups of letters can work together to spell one sound—and that letters can influence the sounds of other letters! Introducing: BOSSY R 👑 If your child or students are ready for the next level of phonics instruction, this is a skill to work on! I love using: 📚 Sound cards with pictures of words featuring each r-controlled vowel sound 🎵 A Bossy R song to reinforce the concept ✏️ Visual cues like underlining the r-controlled vowel as we practice decoding 👀 Explicitly teaching students to group the vowel + r together when reading words The goal isn’t just memorizing “Bossy R” words. It’s helping kids understand why the letters work together the way they do so they can apply that knowledge when they encounter new words. Comment BOSSY and I’ll send you some great Bossy R teaching resources! 👑 #phonics #phonicsinstruction #structuredliteracy #scienceofreading #readinginstruction rcontrolledvowels bossyr firstgradeteacher firstgradereading literacyinstruction earlyliteracy readingteacher phonemicawareness decoding phonicsactivities
🚨 Your child’s school says they use Structured Literacy… but do they REALLY? 👀 “Structured Literacy” has become a BIG phrase in reading education. But putting the words Structured Literacy on a curriculum doesn’t automatically mean the instruction your child receives is actually structured. #StructuredLiteracy #Dyslexia #DyslexiaAwareness #ScienceOfReading #ReadingInstruction #ReadingIntervention #DyslexiaParents #Literacy #ParentAdvocacy #saydyslexia #dyslexiadiva #dyslexiaondemand #therapynottutoring #dontcallonmepodcast #structuredliteracy #dyslexiaeducation #dyslexiatherapy #takeflight

I got a phone call on Friday from a school in Texas that uses Hello Decodables. They were asking if I had a correlation chart showing how the Hello Decodables align to leveled readers. And the question stopped me because it exposes a misunderstanding I think we still have about what decodable text is actually for. A decodable book is not a different kind of leveled reader. And a decodable scope and sequence is not another leveling system that can be converted into A, B, C, D… or Fountas & Pinnell, Lexile, DRA, or any other text level. They serve different purposes. Leveled texts are organized around the difficulty of the whole text. Decodable texts are organized around the phonics knowledge a student has been explicitly taught. And this is the part I think we sometimes miss: the decodable book is the practice tool, not the lesson. First, we explicitly teach the phonics skill. We model it. Students practice reading and spelling words with it. They build accuracy with the pattern. Then we put a decodable text in their hands so they can apply that newly learned skill to connected text. That is the job of a decodable. It provides intentional practice with the code students have been taught while still requiring them to do the work of reading: blending through words, recognizing previously taught patterns, building automaticity, attending to meaning, and ultimately becoming more fluent readers. So the question isn’t, “What level is this decodable?” The question is, “What phonics skills has this student been taught, and which decodable text gives them the right practice applying those skills?” That distinction matters because when we try to force decodable books into a leveled-reading framework, we’re bringing the old system of thinking right along with us. We didn’t replace leveled readers with decodables so we could create a new set of levels. Decodables are not the curriculum. They are the application of the curriculum. (continued in the comments)

Comment “LP” and I’ll send you helpful links for OG lesson planning + teaching your way (there’s a freebie in there, too!) ⬇️ One thing I hear ALL the time after OG training: “I understand the approach… but I still don’t always know what to do next.” I get it. I remember finishing my own OG training and feeling confident in the why behind phonics instruction, but still pausing when it came time to actually plan a lesson. After 20 years as an OG teacher, tutor, and trainer who has trained hundreds of teachers, I’ve seen this over and over. You don’t need another program telling you exactly what to do. You need a framework that helps you understand what comes next, when to move forward, and how to keep your lessons structured without making them rigid. That’s exactly why I created my OG Lesson Plan Manual—to give teachers the piece I wished I had after training. Comment LP and I’ll send you some helpful lesson-planning resources (including a freebie!) ❤️ #OrtonGillingham #ScienceOfReading #PhonicsInstruction #StructuredLiteracy #OrtonGillinghamTutor
