Inside a former tram depot in Manchester is Louise Giovanelli (@louise___giovanelli)’s studio. A beautiful space with a glass roof that lets in tons of sunlight. Or however much the rainy days allow. Curtains are hung here and there, so are paintings of curtains that are much bigger than the real thing.

STUDIO VISIT - MATTIA BOSCO
Mattia Bosco, born in Milan in 1976 into a family of artists, learned traditional techniques like gold leaf gilding from his mother, an art restorer. After graduating, he began working intensively in ceramic. However, sculpture in stone soon took the place of ceramic in his endeavors. While clay “welcomed” every gesture made by the artist, in a thoroughly permeable and passive manner, stone offered a form of resistance, “responding” to the sculptor’s every stroke, allowing him to initiate a genuine, formal dialogue with the material. It is thanks to this potential that lies within stone that the artist has come to understand the inseparability of form and material. In closely examining the stone, he realises that it is a potential sculpture, always leaning towards a certain form.
Mattia Bosco, nato a Milano nel 1976 in una famiglia di artisti, ha appreso dalla madre, restauratrice, tecniche tradizionali come la doratura a foglia d’oro. Dopo la laurea, si è dedicato inizialmente alla ceramica, presto sostituita da lavori scultorei in pietra. Mentre l’argilla “accoglieva” ogni gesto dell’artista in modo del tutto permeabile e passivo, la pietra offriva una forma di resistenza, “rispondendo” a ogni colpo dello scultore e permettendogli così di instaurare un autentico dialogo formale con il materiale. È grazie a questo potenziale insito nella pietra che l’artista è giunto a comprendere l’inscindibilità tra forma e materia. Esaminando attentamente la pietra, si rende conto che essa è una scultura potenziale, sempre orientata verso una forma specifica.

Wednesdays are for studio visits – we take turns opening our spaces, sharing our work, and talking about where we’re at.

I somehow didn’t expect what a big part exchange, reflection, and simply being around other creative people would play in this residency. And I’m so greatful for this experience.
