TOM & GREG — THE MOST SOULLESS ZOOM CALL IN SUCCESSION
One of the funniest and most brutal scenes in Succession is when Tom hands Greg the job of firing hundreds of ATN employees over Zoom. Tom begins with the fake corporate sympathy—acting as though these layoffs are emotionally devastating to him—before casually handing the entire nightmare over to Greg.
Greg then sits there reading an absurd corporate script while hundreds of people slowly realize they’re being fired. The Zoom chat becomes a wall of confusion and anger, while Tom sits just off-camera making jokes and mocking the people losing their jobs. It’s hilarious, but there’s something genuinely disturbing underneath it.
The scene perfectly captures what Succession does so well: the wealthier and more powerful these people become, the more abstract other people’s suffering becomes. These aren’t employees to Tom and Greg anymore—they’re just “scalps,” numbers and cost reductions.
And Greg’s character development is especially funny. This is the same nervous guy who could barely function when he first entered Waystar. Now he’s casually firing hundreds of people because Tom decided he’s the perfect “pain sponge.”
The scene was also closely inspired by real-world mass layoffs conducted over Zoom, including Better.com’s infamous 2021 layoffs, which makes the whole thing even more uncomfortable.

Fact: Succession (2018–2023) — In the Season, Tom Wambsgans confronts his wife Shiv Roy on a beach, delivering one of the show’s most poignant lines about questioning whether the sadness he would feel without her would be less than the sadness he gets from being with her.
Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook filmed this scene on location in Croatia.
Tom’s rare moment of raw honesty marked a massive shift in their dynamics, laying the emotional groundwork for his ultimate corporate betrayal in the Season 3 finale.

lots to unpack here 😳 Watch the HBO Original series Succession with HBO Max on Prime Video.
The strongest position in any negotiation is the ability to walk away. Not as a performance. As a reality.
One of the most powerful scenes in Succession shows exactly what this looks like. Logan Roy doesn’t leave the room because he’s emotional. He leaves because he understands the leverage.
He knows the numbers. He knows the alternatives. He knows the other side needs this deal more than he does. That’s what gives his exit its power.
Too many people negotiate from fear. Fear of losing the opportunity. Fear of hearing “no.” Fear of having to start over.
The best negotiators do their work before the conversation even starts. They know their value. They know their limits. And they know exactly when a bad deal costs more than walking away with nothing.
Walking away isn’t confidence. It’s clarity. Because the moment you actually have another option, you stop negotiating from desperation and start negotiating from strength.

The average operator assumes that every negotiation comes down to throwing more money, flashy perks, or personal favors at the table.
They attempt to bribe their way into a deal, throw in luxury incentives, and wonder why serious decision-makers still walk away.
But elite, high-character strategists understand that true value is built on long-term vision, shareholder alignment, and strategic fit.
If the foundational deal structure fails to deliver real value, no amount of sweetening will close the gap.
In this intense corporate negotiation scene from Succession, the danger of relying on cheap incentives is put on full display.
Kendall Roy attempts to acquire Vaulter, assuming that offering personal compliments, team retention promises, and even a vintage Jaguar will seal the acquisition. However, Lawrence Yee remains completely unimpressed by the superficial sweetening. He recognizes that Waystar Royco doesn't offer the real strategic value, independence, or growth potential his shareholders require. Seeing right through Kendall's pitch, Lawrence politely ends the meeting and walks out, leaving Kendall shocked that money and perks couldn't buy the deal.
True strategic clarity means recognizing that if a deal doesn't make sense on a value level, extra perks are just noise.
Stop offering superficial sweeteners and start focusing on building undeniable core value.
Save this to lock in a vital lesson on negotiation, leverage, and corporate strategy.

Succession isn't just a show about a media empire falling apart — it's a masterclass in how power actually talks. Created by Jesse Armstrong for HBO, it follows the Roy family's brutal fight to control Waystar Royco, and somehow makes boardroom politics feel like a knife fight.
Tom Wambsgans and Cousin Greg are the show's most unlikely pairing — an insecure executive and a broke outsider who never quite belong in the room they're standing in. This is the dinner where that dynamic is born, and it says everything about who holds power in this world and who's just hoping to survive in it.

Logan Roy is the kind of man who doesn’t need to shout to control the room — one look, one sentence, and everyone falls in line. In Succession, Logan Roy isn’t just a rich businessman; he represents a level of power that feels real. Many people compare him to Rupert Murdoch, the real-life media billionaire who built a global news empire and influenced politics across countries. Like Murdoch, Logan is an older media boss with children fighting to take over his company, and a mindset that power must be protected at any cost. The show makes it clear that money can build empires, but it can also destroy families.
Logan teaches a harsh lesson: when you lead with fear instead of love, you may win control — but you lose connection. His children grow up rich, but emotionally broken, always chasing approval that never fully comes. The series quietly asks a deeper question: what is the point of being powerful if your own family doesn’t feel safe around you? It shows how greed, ego, and pride can poison even the strongest dynasty.
Logan’s life is a warning — success without values creates loneliness, and power without empathy creates enemies. In the end, the story isn’t just about billionaires and boardrooms; it’s about legacy, character, and the truth that wealth can buy influence, but it cannot buy loyalty or love.
