Beast is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language action comedy thriller film written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The film stars Thalapathy Vijay as Veera Raghavan, a brilliant but severely traumatized former RAW field agent suffering from PTSD after a military operation accidentally costs a child’s life. The main narrative kicks off months later when Veera is caught inside Chennai’s fictional East Coast Mall during a heavily coordinated terrorist hijack led by the ruthless Umar Saif, who demands the release of his captured terrorist leader brother, Umar Farooq. Alongside his love interest Preethi (played by Pooja Hegde) and an eccentric crew of security guards and shoppers (including VTV Ganesh, Yogi Babu, and Redin Kingsley), Veera is forced to break his self-imposed retirement, utilizing his lethal combat skills and Nelson’s signature brand of dark comedy to methodically eliminate the terrorists from within. Bolstered by a massive chart-buster music album composed by Anirudh Ravichander—featuring global hits like “Arabic Kuthu” and “Jolly O Gymkhana”—and sleek cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa, the film hit theaters on April 13, 2022. While it received mixed reviews from critics regarding its script, Beast proved to be an overwhelming commercial success at the box office, shattering initial records in Tamil Nadu and grossing between ₹210 to ₹300 crore worldwide to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time
