Comment “DOME”
This roof is almost flat. But it’s a dome.
Known as Rohtak Domes, these shallow brick domes are a traditional roofing technique from Rohtak, Haryana, where the curve is so subtle that it can almost disappear to the eye.
The construction uses ordinary bricks and, importantly, can be built without conventional shuttering, relying heavily on the skill and experience of the mason.
The technique has been passed down through generations of artisans and is now being adapted for contemporary homes and buildings.
With less dependence on resource-intensive concrete roofing, Rohtak Domes offer an interesting example of how traditional construction knowledge can still have a place in modern architecture.

I probably wasn’t supposed to be on this jobsite. 😁
I had my construction clothes on, my Carbonless Builder shirt, waved at a few people, and nobody thought twice about it.
Truth is, I’ve been doing this for over 50 years.
Builder.
Designer.
Developer.
Energy Auditor.
Realtor.
Author.
I started out selling candles as a Cub Scout and somehow ended up spending my life studying why some buildings last and others don’t.
The framing detail in this video caught my eye because I haven’t seen it done this way since the 1980s.
Old-school builders thought differently.
Sometimes there’s a lot we can learn from that.
If you’d like to hear my story and learn why I’m so passionate about sustainable building, affordable housing, and affordable living…
Type AUDIO below.
🎧 $30 gets you the audiobook AND the e-book with all the photos, graphs, and illustrations.
Or grab the hardcover or paperback through the Amazon link or the Linktree in my bio.
Affordable Housing Matters.
Affordable Living Matters More.

“One of the reasons we love to design traditional buildings is there’s a narrative and a romance to them.” — Paul Whalen, partner at @RAMSArchitects
@Claremont_Hall on the Union Theological Seminary campus in Morningside Heights, designed by RAMSA, is proudly featured in @RobbReport’s December ‘Luxury Property Guide—Cult Classics’ showcasing new classical-leaning residential towers found in NYC’s modern day new developments.
Designed as a sustainable building, Claremont Hall earned a LEED Certification as well as leading the way for the renovation and preservation to Union’s campus that will reduce carbon footprint.
Introducing New Century Modern🥹
I went to Robert Rummer’s 97th birthday and got to hear him talk about building some of the most desirable mid century homes in the area. No better time to share the floor plan for the MCM revival known now as New Century Modern.

We’re honored that The Arc has been shortlisted for the 2025 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
Built at @greenschoolbali, The Arc is the result of more than a decade of hands-on research and meticulous construction, exploring bamboo’s immense potential as a sustainable building material. Its interlacing arches form a self-supporting system inspired by nature’s geometry, creating a space that feels impossibly light yet deeply grounded. ᕱᕱ
@agakhanawardforarchitecture recognizes projects that push architectural boundaries ethically, sustainably, and imaginatively.
The values we strive to embody are in every structure we create.

Sustainable building often comes under scrutiny for durability, especially when it involves materials like mud or thatch. In Vinu Daniel’s @ar.vinudaniel work, those materials are not treated as experimental alternatives, but as systems that have already existed and performed over long periods of time.
His construction process begins with what is available and appropriate for the site, using materials in response to climate, terrain, and everyday use. Over more than two decades of practice, many of these buildings continue to stand and remain occupied, allowing the work itself to answer the assumption.
