The collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is truly one of the defining director-actor partnerships of modern cinema. Beginning with Edward Scissorhands in 1990, they went on to create a whole bunch of fantastic projects, including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows. I mean… come on. What’s great is that rather than trying to shape Depp into a particular kind of performer, he valued his curiosity, willingness to take risks, and ability to disappear into unusual characters, which are obviously the only ones he finds interesting.

Producers wanted a professional singer to dub over Helena Bonham Carter’s vocals in Sweeney Todd. She flat-out refused, trained for months, and sang every single note herself — live on set. Johnny Depp later admitted her soft, almost whispered delivery was so strange and intimate that it threw him off. He said he could barely look her in the eye during their takes because it felt that uncomfortable and real. The result? One of the most unsettling, unpolished musical performances ever put on screen — and it works precisely because nothing about it was smoothed out or faked.

He’s sailing across 46th street! Welcome @daniel.j.yearwood to the cast of Sweeney Todd.

While filming Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Helena Bonham Carter made a creative decision that helped define her unforgettable performance as Mrs. Lovett. Rather than having a professional singer dub her vocals or trying to sound like a polished Broadway performer, she insisted on singing every song herself. Carter believed Mrs. Lovett shouldn’t have a flawless, technically perfect voice. Instead, she wanted her singing to feel fragile, eerie, and emotionally worn, reflecting the character’s lonely life, unstable mind, and dark sense of humor. That slightly imperfect, ghostly quality made the performance feel far more authentic than a studio-perfect vocal ever could. Director Tim Burton fully supported the choice, allowing Carter to lean into the character rather than focusing on vocal perfection. The result is a performance that feels intimate and unsettling at the same time, with every note serving the story instead of simply showcasing vocal ability. It’s a reminder that in great musicals, the most memorable performances aren’t always the most technically perfect-they’re the ones that feel honest. Helena Bonham Carter’s haunting vocals became an essential part of Mrs. Lovett’s charm, helping make Sweeney Todd one of the most distinctive movie musicals of its era.
