Big beautiful Queen “Ali Nicole” Alka Nikki. Seeing her early this summer has been something out of dream @oneoceandiving I usually deter tigers with just one arm but on this approach Nikki came in with momentum so added a second arm as back up but left it bent to push away from her if needed, my other arm is straight with elbow locked. Little info like this helps humans to be better prepared to share the ocean with these extremely important animal. Dancing with Great White Sharks 🦈 There is constant communication with every movement. Every small muscle engaged or relaxed, directional angle position, depth, distance, acceleration, posture, and path. I love animal behavior and appreciate the patience, empathy, grace, and heightened awareness and years of precursory and continued constant observation and extensive considerations that is necessary to “transcend language barriers” to discover what is possible in inter-species communication and considerations for unexpected interactions, to understand the spectrum of respectful coexistence. Without the expanse of experience, water skill, and behavioral knowledge specific to this species I wouldn’t recommend to anyone to ever do this. I am forever grateful for the patience they have extended to me, for pushing me at times, for showing me, teaching me, and helping me discover and explore the unknown. To me sharks are role models, I know that might seem like an odd role model but I truly feel that humankind could greatly benefit from being more “shark like.” They have taught me so much and helped shape who I am. My tribute of gratitude is in the work I’ve done to develop educational programs and resources available to the public and push to actually pass laws to protect them. 🦈 Swimming with sharks is seriously one of the most intimidating, exhilarating, yet surprisingly peaceful things I’ve ever done. @thecolecrews and I got the experience to swim with them on the last day of our honeymoon in Bimini while with @freediversteph. Like many, I’ve been afraid of them for a looong time, ever since watching the movie Jaws when I was a kid. I was definitely apprehensive about getting in the water at first. After I got in, that fear quickly subsided. It was incredible being in such close proximity to these apex predators. I’m quickly learning that perspectives of sharks are largely based on lack of knowledge and experiences; I know mine were. Although a short moment, it was neat to co-exist with these feared animals and I can’t wait until the next experience and to learn more about them. . . . However, during the summertime, the water on the North Shore can become flat and clam, with little to no waves. This is due to seasonal changes in weather patterns, with the winter months bringing in large swells and the summer months bringing calmer conditions. During the summer, the trade winds that typically blow from the northeast weaken, making calmer seas. This makes summertime a divers paradise on the North Shore. We love Tiger shark Queen Nikki’s enthusiasm to greet @oceanramsey 😂 Ocean reading an approach quickly and accurately knowing when to respectfully back up. @oneoceandiving the safety diver is always the first person in the water and the last person out and the one responsible for respectfully evaluating the sharks behavior before inviting others into the water 💙 🦈 Murky water and a lot of bird activity and the little opelu fish trying to hide from hunting kawa kawa under the boat made this day extra exciting with both fish and sharks practically jumping out of the water. 🦈 Glad I ended up turning on the @gopro and my @canonusa camera before we got in @oneoceandiving so we have this moment to share and appreciate 🦈 Watch @oceanramsey last two posts to see Nikki’s behavior prior to this moment which left Ocean laughing more than surprised. Glad to see these lady sharks offshore. 💙 After the dive we stopped to watch as the sharks cruised all around following the kawa kawa and birds splashing as they all seemed to be hunting opelu and malolo in every direction.
