There’s a reason top electronic music producers keep multi-million dollar racks of classic analog gear.
Listening to Joel tweak the filters on these vintage synthesizers shows just how much warmth, grit, and character hardware brings to modern mainstage tracks. Software plugins are incredible for sound design, but real analog circuitry has an unpredictability that just hits different.
Which legendary synthesizer are you building your dream studio around?

The Moog IIIp is one of the rarest synthesizers ever made. Robert Moog built it in the late 1960s as a fully modular analog system. Individual modules including oscillators, filters, sequencers, and reverb units connect together through patch cables. The flexibility it offered was unmatched, but it was notoriously difficult to operate.
The Beatles used a Moog IIIp during the Abbey Road sessions in 1969. It can be heard on Here Comes the Sun and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. John Lennon found it too complex and sent it straight back to Moog after the sessions wrapped.
The video was shot with Franzizca at La Siesta del Fauno
Brangien is in LA with her dad for the week which means I’m home alone with the cats. It also means that I brought the synthesizers up into the living room to write software for synths (more on that later). I was admiring “the rig” when I realized I hadn’t set it up fully since my last show with The Long Winters. So I set it up just now—which taught me that I’m missing three important cords. I’ve added that Deco effect pedal and replaced my Juno-106 with a Juno-X in the middle tier. Are you bored yet?
This is the most roundabout way of saying The Long Winters are (is?) playing at Pike Place Market on August 28th at 8pm in front of the pig. I’m calling it The Gig at The Pig. No one else is. Hope to see you there.
Back to the basement!
finally got new glasses
huge thank you to @theblipblox for the BlipBlox After Dark Edition, I love having a synth that both me & my kiddos can enjoy together 🤞🏼
also gotta say a huge thanks to @butterflyeffects.world for the Dobbo (barely scratching the surface of this one, gonna see it a lot in upcoming vids) as well as @nativeaudio for the Pattern Keeper, @vongonelectronics for the Ultrasheer, @franklin_audio for the MP-10, @arturia_official for the MiniLab 37, and of course, @chasebliss for the Big Time, Gen Loss mkii, & Clean, which were all used for this jam 💫
it’s been an insane past few months and all of the support I’ve received from all of you as well as the love from some of my favorite music brands has been surreal to say the least. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, truly 🫶🏻

« Phase distortion (PD) synthesis is a synthesis method introduced in 1984 by Casio in its CZ range of synthesizers. In outline, it is similar to phase modulation synthesis as championed by Yamaha Corporation (under the name of frequency modulation), in the sense that both methods dynamically change the harmonic content of a carrier waveform by influence of another waveform (modulator) in the time domain. However, the application and results of the two methods are quite distinct.
Casio made five different synthesizers using their original concept of PD synthesis (with variations). The later VZ-1 and co’s synthesis method Interactive phase distortion is much more similar to the aforementioned phase modulation, rather than a direct evolution of phase distortion »
