“This is such a sweet day as we move our fifth graders up to Middle School,” said Mark Tayloe, Head of Lower School at Charlotte Latin School. On the morning of Wednesday, May 29, in Thies Auditorium, the Grade 5 Moving Up Ceremony marked the transition of 96 Latin students from the Lower School to the Middle School. 🧑‍🎓 The ceremony was emceed by two Grade 5 students, Tucker Bezanson and Jack Henson, and the centerpiece of the morning was four more students (Shiloh David, Sally Fagg, Emilia Howard, and Sydney Seagraves) sharing memories of their favorite times in the Lower School, such as State Fair, Grandparents’ Day, and Finding Nemo Jr. 💙 Shiloh remembered how being greeted by name on her first day at Latin set the tone for her entire school experience: “It was not just a formality — it was a beacon of light.” 💙 Sally said that the recent roller coaster project taught her about gravity and motion, but working on small teams to build roller coasters also helped her know her classmates better and brought home the importance of teamwork and compromise. An important lesson she learned: “Problems don’t fix themselves.” 👩‍🎓 Before the students walked across the Thies stage, receiving the certificates that marked their transition into Grade 6, Head of School Charles Baldecchi delivered remarks in which he thanked them for their leadership this past year. He specified some attributes of the Portrait of a Latin Leader that they should strive to embody — the Dynamic Communicator, the Resilient Navigator, and the Courageous Advocate — and told them, “I know you will all rise to that challenge next year.”

On November 4, 1924, voters in Wyoming made history. They elected Nellie Tayloe Ross as the first female governor in the history of the United States. Her victory came less than five years after women gained the right to vote nationwide, and it marked a new moment in American politics. Ross’s path to the governor’s office began with tragedy. Her husband, William B. Ross, had been the sitting governor of Wyoming when he died suddenly in 1924. The Democratic Party nominated Nellie to run in a special election to complete his term. At first, she was hesitant. But after reflection and encouragement from supporters, she decided to continue her husband’s work and entered the race. The campaign was short and challenging. Ross faced political pressure and public scrutiny not only because she was a woman but also because she chose not to campaign actively in person, which was uncommon at the time. Instead, she issued written statements that outlined her political views. She promised honesty in government, fiscal responsibility, and support for farmers and workers. Her platform closely reflected her late husband’s values, appealing to both sympathy and continuity. When the results came in, Ross had narrowly defeated her Republican opponent. She was sworn in as governor on January 5, 1925, becoming the first woman to lead a U.S. state. During her two years in office, she focused on policies related to banking reform, child welfare, and prohibition enforcement, and she strongly supported women’s participation in government. Despite her accomplishments, she lost her bid for reelection in 1926, but her political career was far from over. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her as Director of the U.S. Mint, making her the first woman to hold that position. She served in that role for twenty years, helping modernize the Mint’s operations and overseeing the production of U.S. coinage during a time of major economic change.
