When we set out to hike Te Araroa with our four kids, we knew we’d meet people along the way who would be supportive and encourage the kids, knowing firsthand how tough the trail can be. But what we never could have imagined was the deep connections we'd form, the unwavering support, and the genuine friendships we’d make along the way. It’s not just the trail that’s unforgettable—it’s the people we’ve met and the memories we’ve created together. Just a cool, casual, chemical engineer with 50,000 miles under his belt <- the circumference of the earth. I met ‘Rambler’ on the A.T. In Maine, he helped me when we set the record, we crossed paths when he was on the Florida Trail, and we synched up and hiked through the Winds and Yellowstone together on the C.D.T. He’s spent time with our kids - helped our kids. And whenever I’m in State College he invites me to stay at his childhood home where he caretakers for his 97-year old mother. On this visit, we all sat together in the living room to read Gary Paulsen’s “Gone to the Woods” aloud. The word tramily (trail+family) didn’t exist when I was doing long trails, but I’m pretty sure this is that. (Also, who besides tramily would take you on a hike through fields that filter sewage and have the sprinklers going?!) #tramily #thruhikers #longtrails

JMT Tramily Reunion! The first mile descending into the canyon brought tears to my eyes. So many what ifs. What if I’d never met them? What if I’d never seen places like this? What if my knee never healed? What if I grew too old? What if I hadn’t known there was more out there just waiting to be discovered? It’s taken me years to find the life I have now, the one where I feel most myself. It’s been a long time since I’ve allowed myself a real vacation. I love the work that I do, but the Capricorn workaholic in me doesn’t often allow me to sit still and just rest. I get this super anxious nervous energy that makes me feel guilty and like I need to fill the time with something “productive.” Of course, that’s flawed logic, because self-care IS productive. I had to miss last year’s tramily reunion, so there was no way I was going to miss another one. There’s something so healing about this squad, about being on the water, about unplugging. I need to do this for myself more frequently. Does this mean the novella is late? Yes. Was it worth it? ABSOLUTELY. Thanks and love to everyone who made this trip so special and memorable. I can’t believe I spent a week on a cruise ship after being so afraid of my motion sickness all the time. New travel level unlocked!! 🥰❤️ #tramily #tramilyreunion #cruise #summervibes
