#TechStep
Techstep emerged in the late ’90s as jungle shed its reggae roots and embraced something colder, harder, and more clinical.
This was the sound of steel: distorted Reese basslines, surgical break edits, dystopian atmospheres.
It was less about vibes, more about tension—darkness engineered for the dancefloor.
Pioneers like Ed Rush & Optical, Dom & Roland, Fierce, and DJ Trace helped shape the genre’s DNA. The influence of this era still echoes through drum and bass today.
Massive thanks to DJ Trace/ @dsci4 for allowing us to use his legendary tune Sonar in this reel. Your work helped define an era—we're grateful!

TECHSTEP TWO-FER TUESDAY 1 of 2
There’s a bit of confusion surround Ed Rush’s mislabelled Prototype Records debut - “Killamanjaro” was made in the No U-Turn studios with Nico on the boards, listen closely (how could you listen at any other distance to a tune this large?) to the shades of Torque already peeking through the mutating mix - “Subway” however, has Dom’s signature cinematic sci-fi flick feel to it - in either case it’s Ed Rush behind these two nightmarish tech plodders and there’s no mistaking that - happy #TechstepTuesday - PRO 005 … #dailydnb #drumandbass #jungle #dnbarchive #historyofdnb #edrush #killamanjaro #subway #nico #domandroland #prototyperecordings #1996 #techstep #grooverider

🎛 The Steppa DnB Drum Pattern Explained 🎚
The Steppa drum pattern is a classic DnB rhythm that creates a steppy, rolling groove by shifting the second snare 1/8th note earlier than in a standard 2-Step pattern. This subtle change pushes the beat forward, making it feel tighter and more energetic—perfect for jungle, techstep, and Metalheadz-style DnB.
🔊 Key Features:
✔ Snare on beat 2, second snare shifted 1/8th early – creating a steppy feel
✔ More driving & syncopated than the standard 2-Step
✔ Often combined with ghost snares & hi-hat shuffles for extra groove
✔ Works at 170-175 BPM – a staple in rolling, darker DnB styles
This pattern is key to creating a steppy, rolling feel in your DnB tracks. Try it out and experiment with your own variations!
