Have you ever noticed that Tenby’s famous Five Arches actually has six? 👀
The extra sixth arch isn’t a true gateway. It was propped up and left with its rough appearance following a structural collapse.
During a WWII blackout, the rector of St Mary’s Church reportedly forgot the new arch was there, walked straight into it and ended up in hospital.
The other arches were opened up much later to improve traffic flow, once the tower was no longer needed as part of Tenby’s defences.
The unusual D-shape of the structure was originally designed to create a defensive trap, allowing medieval defenders to funnel attackers into a confined space and fire arrows down from above. 🏹
Today, the Five Arches is internationally recognised as the symbol of the Walled Towns Friendship Circle, which links more than 130 towns across 22 countries.
Next time you walk through, see if you can spot the original portcullis slots — and that rough sixth arch!
