We challenged our brilliant Eastern biology majors to explain their high-level research to a 5-year-old! 🦅🔬
As you can see, swapping out complex terms like “secondary metabolites” and “microbes” for simple concepts is a lot harder than it looks. After a few laughs and some quick thinking, they successfully broke down their scientific projects about fish germs and big island volcanoes. We love seeing our students share their hard work, adaptability, and passion for science!
Drop a 🐸 in the comments if you think our Eagles passed the test!
Mrs. Hooper’s Biome Project is a living example of our mission, offering a seamless blend of academic rigor and artistic passion. By immersing themselves in specialized research, creating original artwork, and engaging in peer-to-peer teaching, students truly embody the spirit of deep, exploratory learning!
And for our third Humans in Bio of the 2025-2026 school year...Dr.Pyne! 🥼🔬🧬 Listen in on a preview of our interview with Dr.Pyne talking about his capstone course!

Explaining things you don’t understand, part 26

The term "Biologist" alone is such a heavy title to carry. Please call me a nature croucher instead 😂
Joke’s aside, we’ve only named around 2 million species on Earth. But scientists estimate there could be ~9 million or way more.
That means most life on this planet? We haven’t even met yet.
Every year, thousands of new species are still being discovered. So no, graduating from Biology isn’t a finished book. It’s barely a rough draft.
Maybe being a “biologist” isn’t about knowing life.
Maybe it’s about staying curious enough to keep looking 😉🌿

I loved tonight’s research topic! We both learned something 🦋
High school biology students dissected squid, tracing organs and body systems. 🔬

Are you studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours this year? Or thinking about it in the future? If so, you’ll have some interesting ways to learn.
In this video (recorded last year) a group of students had a behind-the-scenes look at the @qvmag_official.
The entomology students ventured deep into the vault to see many displays of insects and other interesting research specimens that are not usually on public display. A similar tour is planned for students this year.

#Research with arguably the most beautiful butterflies in the world! 🦋
That’s what students like Gabi Raboni ’26 — a neuroscience and psychology double major from São Paulo, Brazil — are participating in at AU.
As part of a @nsfgov grant awarded to Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Carrie Olson-Manning, Gabi and others are researching how monarchs choose where to lay their eggs from hundreds of species of milkweeds. Caterpillars don’t thrive on some species of milkweeds, so she’s trying to figure out what cues they use to find the milkweed that gives their offspring the best chance.
#FindYourBold in research (like Gabi) at Augustana University!
