For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to produce reality/unscripted TV that truly centers the lives of women with disabilities. Not as side characters. Not as inspiration porn. But as the main characters in their own stories - in all their unapologetic raw authentic badass beauty. To think I’m doing exactly that, with our own production company (@_making_space_media @keely_cat_wells) alongside Hello Sunshine (@hellosunshine) in my newfound home for a US audience - is beyond anything I could have imagined…. Today was a pinch-me moment. However, in America, we prioritize efficiency and productivity. By giving children a short lunch break, schools are essentially training them to eat quickly and get back to work. This mindset is reflective of the broader cultural expectation to work long hours and prioritize work over personal relationships. Kids are even assigned hours and hours of homework that cause even the parents to feel overwhelmed. This normalizes things like working overtime and making yourself accessible while on vacation. Breaking out of this hamster wheel doesn’t just happen. You have to be intentional about it. And obviously, we can’t just all walk out of our jobs without a plan in place.
