Thank you for sharing your talent with me, for believing in me when I did not, for showing me jazz like no one else ever had. I’ll never forget back at Berklee when you got down on the floor of your office with your cigarette (that you definitely were not allowed to be smoking in there) and you dropped your drumstick onto the rug and showed me tap and rebound. Everyone who learned from you or played music with you was so lucky. You truly were one of the greats, Ricky. Our relationship was long and complex over the years, but you supported me more than anything. I am grateful for our last phone calls. I wish I could have been there to say goodbye. I would’ve told you that your hair looked great, I’d have said thank you, and I would have told you that you were the best drummer of our time. You won’t be forgotten— legends never die.
