Not every luxury hotel is made to impress.
Park Hyatt Shanghai is different.
Located on floors 79–93,
this used to be the highest hotel in the world.
Dark tones. Minimal design.
A quieter kind of luxury.
The room?
Floor-to-ceiling windows facing the skyline —
even the bathtub has a view.
Not for everyone,
but if you get it, you get it.

Still my favorite hotel in Shanghai ❤️🔥
Park Hyatt Shanghai — a different kind of luxury.
Set high above the city between floors 79–93,
this was once the highest hotel in the world.
But it’s not about height.
It’s about restraint.
Minimalist interiors, deep tones,
and a calm atmosphere that feels far from the city below.
The room opens up to the full skyline —
with the Oriental Pearl Tower right in front of you.
Even the bathtub comes with a view.
Not loud. Not flashy.
Just quietly refined.

Welcome to my CBC Roots Diaries, growing up Canadian but searching for home in China🇨🇳🇨🇦
Episode 1: Staying at one of Shanghai’s rarest heritage hotels to reconnect with my roots.
At InterContinental Ruijin, 1930s old Shanghai isn’t a theme. It’s alive. Garden paths, red-brick villas, history in every hallway.
As a Chinese Canadian, this felt bigger than luxury. It felt personal🥹
Michelin-recognized Xin Yuan Lou, timeless architecture, and a quiet reminder of where I come from.
Thank you @intercontinental for having me❤️

📍Regent Shanghai Pudong ✨ pure Shanghai luxury
Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the Huangpu River and historic Bund buildings, making the view truly unforgettable. 🌆
Highlights: Bund view rooms, beautiful indoor infinity pool, and a prime location near Shanghai Tower.
💰 Price: about $350–$800+/night depending on room type.
Thanks to my Expedia Platinum status, I was upgraded to a King Suite with city view for all 3 nights (normally ~ $700/night).
⭐ Personal rating: 9/10
The hotel is even more beautiful and classy in real life, with such a romantic the Bund view — especially at night when the city lights up. I wasn’t planning to do a review, so this reel is just what I saved from my stories. 😭

Mandarin Oriental Shenzhen rises above Futian from the upper levels of a landmark tower, positioning the hotel within the city’s commercial core while opening out to broad views of its rapidly developing skyline. Arrival is anchored by the Cube, a sculptural architectural statement that also houses the ballroom and establishes a confident, contemporary first impression.
This stay was in one of the hotel’s suites, where scale becomes a defining feature rather than an indulgence. Extending well beyond 100 square metres, the suite is laid out with clear separation between living and sleeping areas, allowing the space to function comfortably over longer stays. The design leans towards polished marble and clean modern lines, supported by practical luxuries including walk-in wardrobes, Dyson hairdryers, Bose sound systems and Diptyque amenities. Floor-to-ceiling windows reinforce a strong sense of place, while the bathroom mirrors Mandarin Oriental’s preference for proportion, calm lighting and understated comfort.
Food and beverage remains a central pillar, spread across eight venues that prioritise range without diluting focus. The Bay by Chef Fei leads with contemporary Cantonese cooking delivered with technical precision, followed by RIN’s refined Japanese offering and Tapas 77’s Spanish approach. Bazaar offers a more relaxed take on Asian flavours, while Opus 388 combines premium meats and seafood with some of the hotel’s most commanding views. Lounges and a cake shop complete the dining mix.
Wellness facilities occupy the 68th floor, where the spa, indoor pool and fitness centre form a quiet retreat above the city. Treatments follow Mandarin Oriental’s established wellness philosophy, supported by features such as a heated quartz sand bed and well-considered treatment rooms.
The hotel operates at scale, using space, service and culinary depth to define its character, with height and restraint working together rather than competing for attention.

Price doesn’t always tell the full story.
We paid roughly $280–$300/night for both, but the overall experience felt worlds apart.
Full breakdown is on our YouTube channel.
At the same price point, which would you pick?
