As a boy, James’ Tim Booth was sent to boarding school, an experience he describes as akin to Lindsay Anderson’s ‘If…’. Without the room to verbally express himself, Tim leaned into dance, an impulse that was to become part of James’ DNA and both a driving force and emotional response in his life. Tim joins Miranda Sawyer to talk all things 90s and explain how he has made a mind-body-spirit philosophy his life’s work. Comment 90s and we'll DM you a link to listen or watch the full episode! #timbooth #james #90smusic #90sband

Lead singer of James, Tim Booth, speaks with such honesty in this interview with James O’Brien about how he survived boarding school. He describes developing what Nick Duffell calls a survivor personality – building an emotional armour, learning to shut down feelings and never letting anyone see that anything is affecting you. In a boarding school environment, this can be an incredibly effective survival strategy. The difficulty comes later in life, when that same armour is still in place long after it’s needed. It can leave us struggling with intimacy, vulnerability, emotions and authentic connection, without fully understanding why. Tim also talks about how music became his lifeline during those years. The irony for me is that I absolutely loved James when I was at boarding school. Sit Down is still one of my all-time favourite songs, and I remember travelling to Brixton Academy at 16 to see them live. I had no idea that Tim Booth had also been to boarding school. Since working in this field, I’m continually discovering more people who attended boarding school – people you would never have guessed. Thank you to Tim Booth and James O’Brien for such an open, thoughtful and compassionate conversation.
