This is a profound statement that deserves reflection:

![Why the Trinity?
We must first answer the question, who or what is Christ? The reason for this is that the incarnation––the eternal Son of God becoming human, is considered the foundational, historical event that led the early church to develop the doctrine of the Trinity. The Church Fathers came to understand that a proper view of Christ was foundational to every other major doctrine within scripture. My Christology affects my theology and soteriology. Once the Fathers came to accept that the New Testament teaches that Christ is both God and man, they were compelled to explain how this can be. I imagine the early church would have been content to leave the doctrine of the person of Christ a mystery. But, because of false teachings, they were forced to work out a proper view of Christ. They determined four primary aspects that must be maintained in order to produce a legitimate description of the person of Christ:
1 His true and proper deity.
2 His true and proper humanity.
3 The union of these two natures – humanity and deity in one person.
4 The proper distinction of these two natures in one person.
“[The Church] felt that as long as these requirements were not met, or only partly met, its conception of Christ would be defective.” Extremes in Christology, even those with the best of intentions, stem from exceeding or surrendering one of these four points at the expense of the others. The Fathers were not, according to Berkhof, attempting to provide an exhaustive description of exactly how the Son is simultaneously God and man: “[T]he early Church did not claim to be able to penetrate to the depths of this great doctrine, and did not pretend to give a solution of the problem of the incarnation in the formula of Chalcedon. It merely sought to guard the truth against the errors of theorizers, and to give a formulation of it which would ward off various, palpably unscriptural, constructions of truth.” (Louis Berkhof, The History of Christian Doctrines(Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1975), 101-102).
The Trinity originated from a proper view of Christ.
