I call this time of year the IPhone across the table period. Right before Thanksgiving, and then in earnest after, I get asked by friends, family, strangers and acquaintances, what jewelry to buy someone as a holiday gift. They put their phone into my hand in Notes mode and say “type in like five things you like.” This year, I thought I’d make it easier for all of us: a comprehensive and deeply considered list of 25 pieces I think are THE ONES. There are classics, surprises, and absolute dreams. Also included, true confessions: what did I buy myself for my 30th birthday? What pendant was I wearing while I wrote all this? True confessions. It’s been so hard for me to post about food lately.💔 There is a part of my Middle Eastern heart and soul that has ached in a way I can’t fully describe but it makes enjoying and sharing food almost impossible these days. Then I saw this and the message was just so clear. Food is our connection It’s a way to share love and come together It’s our humanity and our heritage It feeds joy Watching this absolutely heartwarming, seratonin-filled exchange between a mom and her daughter just took me back 24 years to when my baby was a baby. And there is no more precious use of time than to share a moment like this with the people who are like sunshine. Close your eyes and remember how it felt to eat something amazing with someone you love and never ever let that feeling go. It will bring you a compassion and understanding that you’ve maybe never experienced because it will become so clear that we are all connected. 🤍ChefMareya Consider a donation to @wckitchen to help feed those in need around the world. You can grow beyond your original role and still be shaped by it. When someone asks what we do, we still say we’re SLPs. We usually add that we don’t work with kids anymore, and that we create tools to support the people who do. We’re former special educators who saw the same problems you face every day... systems that don’t fit real workflows, documentation that spills into nights and weekends, and the constant mental load of staying organized and audit-ready. Over the last ten years, we stepped back from the day-to-day to build tools designed by SLPs, for SLPs, that actually work in real school days. But along the way, we lost touch with something important: the honest, messy, human parts of showing up. In 2026, we’re changing that. We’re back, and we’re on Substack writing honestly about what we learned in schools, what we’ve learned building products, and what we’re still figuring out.
