Lawmakers unveiled a 7.5-foot bronze statue of former President Harry Truman in the U.S. Capitol rotunda on Thursday. The nation’s 33rd president came into office after President Franklin Roosevelt died in April 1945 amid World War II. President Truman helped end the war, establish the United Nations and NATO, and desegregate the U.S. military and federal workforce. “No president in such a short period of time made more consequential decisions than Harry Truman,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) said at the unveiling ceremony. The former president previously represented Missouri for 10 years in the U.S. Senate before being elected in 1944 to the vice presidency – a post he would hold for 82 days before FDR’s death. The statue, sculpted by Tom Corbin of Kansas City, joins the National Statuary Hall collection and replaces one of former Sen. Thomas Hart Benton. Missouri’s other statue is one of former Sen.
