Beaton by Bailey — 1971 An extract from Beaton by Bailey, the 1971 documentary made by photographer David Bailey about Cecil Beaton (1904–1980). The film is less a conventional biography than a portrait of Beaton through the people and cultural world around him. It brings together figures from fashion, photography, art and society, including Truman Capote and Diana Vreeland, who speak about their friend and about the extraordinary character Beaton had created for himself. Capote describes Beaton as having a kind of “grand seigneur” quality — an aristocratic manner and social vanity that was part of his personality. Vreeland, who worked closely with Beaton and was a lifelong friend, understood how deliberately he constructed himself: his Englishness, his elegance, his taste and his particular vision of beauty. What makes the extract interesting is that we hear about Beaton the person as much as Beaton the photographer. He was not only a celebrated portrait and fashion photographer, but also a designer, illustrator, diarist and costume and set designer. His work moved between photography, theatre, cinema, fashion and high society. He designed the costumes for Gigi and My Fair Lady, among many other projects. The documentary also captures something important about the period: Beaton belonged to an older world of glamour and aristocratic society, while Bailey represented the younger, more rebellious generation of 1960s photography. This major exhibition features more than 350 objects – including precious jewels, historic gemstones, iconic watches and clocks – and charts the evolution of Cartier’s legacy of art, design and craftsmanship since the turn of the 20th century. Highlights on loan from The Al Thani Collection include two spectacular pieces acquired by Maharaja Digvijaysinhji of Nawanagar when he visited London in 1937 for the coronation of King George VI: a necklace created using an exceptional group of oval and cushion-cut Burmese rubies which was later worn in a modified shape by Mrs. Loel Guinness at Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball in 1966, and ‘The Tiger’s Eye Turban Ornament’, a magnificent jewel made using an exceptional 61.5 carat golden hue diamond. Further highlights include the Star of Golconda, a 57.31 carat diamond, set on a spectacular bib necklace with three rows of pearls and diamonds; the Sun Tiara from 1907; and the Beit Tiara from 1909, which was commissioned by Sir Otto Beit, the German-born British businessman and philanthropist, for his wife Lilian.” ‘Cartier’ is on view at the V&A until 16 November 2025.
