(Hosted) Since celebrating a dear friend’s birthday at @pera_singapore last month, I had been eager to return. So when Guzide (@guzmu) the ladyboss and co-owner, invited me to try their Turkish Breakfast, available on weekends and public holidays, I couldn’t resist saying yes. By the way, even though the timing for it is stated as 10am to 12noon, you can walk in at 11.45am and still order it, then take your time to enjoy over the next couple of hours. It was so lovely to chat with Guzide that Sunday morning. We learned a lot about Turkish culture from her, starting with their huge love for tea. And that’s precisely what we downed throughout our meal as the Serpme Kahvalti Breakfast set menu ($49++ per adult, minimum 2 pax, $25++ per child aged 7 to 12) includes it free-flow. We liked how the freshly brewed tea helped to cleanse the palate without being too bitter or tannic. When the first part of the #TurkishBreakfast set menu began landing, our jaws dropped. Many small plates soon covered the surface of our table. We were told that the entire array was 100% made fresh in-house. Thus for the next half an hour or so, conversation ceased as we got busy grazing on: an assortment of Turkish cheeses, colourful olives, grilled seasonal vegetables saturated in olive oil, muhammara (the bell pepper and walnut dip was a big hit during my last visit and it still impressed), tapenade (I’m very fond of its bold savouriness), creamy hummus (another forever fave of mine), crispy fried Mersin potatoes, crisp raw vegetables, housemade jams and preserves (the fig was particularly brilliant), an insane honey & butter with pistachio (drove us all crazy it did), and tahini & pekmez (@guzmu called this traditional Turkish blend of creamy sesame paste and sweet fruit molasses“the nutella of her childhood”). ⬇️ Caption continues below in 2 parts ⬇️

In most countries breakfast is something you eat in five minutes. In Turkey it is an event that lasts three hours. Turkish breakfast. Not a meal. A ceremony. Six cheeses. Four types of olives. Eggs four ways. Fresh honey still in the comb. Kaymak so thick a spoon stands upright in it. Freshly baked bread. All at the same time. And tea. Always tea. Poured and refilled. Never ending. Van breakfast in eastern Turkey. Restaurants serve nothing else. Only breakfast. All day. People book flights from Istanbul to Van specifically for breakfast. That is not an exaggeration. I’m seriously in love with Turkish breakfast. It’s not just the food, it’s the whole experience. Sitting around a table full of little plates… olives, cheeses, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, warm bread, honey with Kaymak… and of course, endless çay 😄 It’s slow, it’s social and it just feels like the perfect way to start the day 💛 Every time I have one, I feel like time slows down a bit. It’s not about rushing, it’s about sharing, talking, and enjoying. Honestly, I think it’s one of my favorite things about being here. You have to come and try it with me sometime, I already know you’d love it. 💛
