āThe Unprocessed Plateā.
With 60 UPF free recipes and a nutrition guide to UPFs spanning two whole chapters itās everything you need with diagrams and easy to understand, plus itāll blow your mind š¤Æā¼ļø
Please remember UPFS are a lifeline for some but for so many of us we do not need to consume the amount we do, the problem isnāt a single nutrient (as so many voices online may want you to believe like one E Number, Sugar or even lack of protein).
The issue is the combination of a lot of proponents added together over time that has led to over 60% of our diets coming from UPFs and 70% and over for children in the UK.
Letās do something about this, education is POWER and I truly hope this next nutrition bible and cook book is going to help you all navigate this conversation š
P.s you do what you want with your diet and I have recipes for meat eaters and vegans in the next book!
DO YOU EAT BREAD EACH MORNING?š
Many people these days will be aware of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). But thereās still a lot of confusion around what they really ARE.
For @doctorchrisvt , itās simple: if itās wrapped in plastic and has at least one ingredient you wouldnāt find in a home kitchen, itās a UPF. And if it makes a health claim on the packet? Ironically, itās even more likely!
For more from my conversation with Chris Van Tulleken, head to Episode 414 of my āFeel Better, Live Moreā podcast.
The third installment in my healthy swaps series is all about cereal!
Often with cereals, the ingredients list is not too bad but there is a high sugar content.Ā By looking on the pack we can find options with slightly less sugar and more fibre
And again, Weetabix, while still technically ultra processed, is actually low in sugar and high in fibre so another good option as a base for a healthy breakfast.
Remember, the most important thing with cereals is that they shouldn't be the only food that you're eating for breakfast.Ā They should be combined with yoghurt or kefir, fruits, eggs and other foods that provide other nutrients to create a healthy, balanced meal.
Let me know if there's any food types you'd like me to cover in future videos!

This is how a āfoodā is made when profit matters more than your health.
What youāre watching starts with low-grade trimmings, fat, skin, blood, organs, and mechanically processed scraps. These are blended together with preservatives, refined salt, corn syrup, and dextrose to create something uniform, shelf-stable, and cheap.
When sugars like corn syrup and dextrose are cooked with protein, they form AGEs, or advanced glycation end products. These damaged proteins create sticky reactions in the body that are connected to a wide range of health problems.
This isnāt about taste. Itās about what happens after you eat it.
If youāre going to consume animal protein, quality matters. Grass-fed, grass-finished red meat is more bioavailable and contains a higher concentration of amino acids than factory-processed options. It also provides zinc, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin K, omega-3s, and unique compounds like carnitine, creatine, carnosine, and CoQ10.
Quality matters. Choose whole, unprocessed animal protein.

As one of the countryās leading nutritionists, Federica Amati has played a key role in educating us about the dangers of ultra-processed foods.ā
ā
But as more of us fret about UPFs, she has a new concern. āMy biggest bugbear is the fear and panic that this narrative has caused,ā she says. So now she has a plan to help shoppers navigate supermarket aisles jammed with UPFs without succumbing to dread over what they are feeding their families.ā
ā
The phrase āultra-processed foodā was coined in 2009 by Carlos Monteiro, a Brazilian professor of nutrition. But there has been an explosion in awareness of the dangers of UPFs thanks to the likes of Chris van Tulleken, the professor of infection and global health at UCL and author of Ultra-Processed People, and Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at Kingās College London and co-founder of Zoe, the health science company.ā

Can you guess what this is?
Real food does not look like this! Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are manufactured from highly altered ingredients that no longer bear a resemblance to their original forms.
They are skillfully crafted to hijack your senses and override your body's inherent signals, leading to overconsumption.
These ultra-processed foods provide no nutritional value and have been associated with serious health problems and premature death! What actions can be taken to rectify this situation?
Take the first step and remove UPFs from your diet.

What ingredients are actually in these cereals?! š„£š
Many cereals on supermarket shelves are considered ultra-processed foods (UPFs) due to their refined grains, added sugars, flavourings and industrial processing.
I donāt want to demonise any brands or food groups š«¶ Everything in moderation!!
Most people donāt realise just how much processed foods impact their healthā¦

Should we be taxing foods like baked beans?
Hereās my thoughts as a dietitian and mum to 6 who feeds her kids jacket potatoes with beans once a week!
Last week Chris Van Tullekan suggested foods like baked beans, fishfingers and wholemeal shop bought bread should be taxed due to their UPF content. Which I cannot agree with.
Not all UPFs are equal, foods like the humble tin of baked beans should not be demonised or put in the same category as other highly palatable, high sugar and salt UPFs that are more obviously not as good for us to be eating all the time.
Beans can contain 8g protein plus 8g fibre. Pair that with toast, add some cheese and you can meet 1/3 of your fibre needs for the day plus get some decent protein.
Beans are cheap and easy. For many they make an affordable meal which is nutritious and why would we want to make that more expensive?
Beans can be a very safe food. They tend to be the same each time which makes them a known quantity for people with autism, ARFID for example.
Shout out to @food.foundation who are encouraging people to eat more beans (of all sorts not just baked beans) for health benefits.
So to clarify. Baked beans are not something you need to worry about. My advice is to choose a lower salt and sugar option and enjoy.
