Biking = good mental health. Just ask the kids! Dutch kids consistently rank among the happiest in the world — UNICEF has put the Netherlands at or near #1 in child wellbeing rankings for years — and researchers point to one unusual factor: independent mobility. Dutch kids get themselves places. Starting around age 6 or 7, most bike to school without a parent, and by 8 or 9 they’re often doing it solo or in loose kid-packs. That’s freedom most kids elsewhere don’t get until much older.
It’s not left to chance, though. Around age 11 or 12, in the final years of primary school, every Dutch kid takes the verkeersexamen — a traffic exam. Written theory first: road signs, right-of-way rules. Then a practical test, riding a real route through town alone while volunteers at intersections score how they handle roundabouts, tram tracks, and traffic. Pass, and you get a certificate — treated with the same seriousness as a driving test, just seven years early.
The infrastructure does the heavy lifting: separated bike lanes, priority intersections, streets built so a kid on a bike isn’t gambling with a car. Independence isn’t a personality trait here — it’s designed in.
📍 Riding through it last week, so inspiring— more insights from our Netherlands to Bruges ride coming soon!
20-year-old Lionel Messi carefully bathing a 6-month-old Lamine Yamal in a plastic tub. Taken in 2007 for a UNICEF charity calendar, the shoot became an incredible full-circle moment as the baby in the tub grew up to become a global football star. The Story Behind the PhotoHow it happened: Yamal's parents (Sheila Ebana and Mounir Nasraoui) entered and won a local raffle in Mataró, Catalonia, organized by UNICEF and FC Barcelona. The prize was a professional photo shoot with a then-emerging Lionel Messi. The Photoshoot: According to photographer Joan Monfort, a young and shy 20-year-old Messi was initially quite nervous and didn't know how to handle the infant in the dressing room. Yamal's mother eventually stepped in and helped ease the tension so Messi could hold him safely in the tub.The Impact: The image remained largely unseen for many years until Yamal's father showed it to him. Once it hit social media, it became a massive worldwide sensation, with fans describing it as a "scripted" coincidence

In a UNICEF video message released after becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2010, Lionel Messi urged people around the world to help protect children’s rights and improve their lives. In the video, he said that football had given him many opportunities and that he wanted to use his global platform to support vulnerable children. Messi encouraged fans to stand with UNICEF so that more children could access healthcare, education, proper nutrition, and equal opportunities, emphasizing that every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy and reach their full potential. Throughout his work with UNICEF, Messi has repeatedly used similar public appeals to raise awareness and encourage support for children in need around the world.

Tom Brady, who moderated part of FIFA's pre-final event, asked Lionel Messi about the now-viral 2007 UNICEF charity photos showing him bathing baby Lamine Yamal. Smiling at the memory, Messi described the images as "crazy" and admitted it was hard to believe that the infant from that photoshoot would now be his opponent in a FIFA World Cup final.
Messi praised the 19-year-old Spain star as one of the best players in the world today, saying Yamal's rise has been incredible to watch. While wishing him continued success—especially at Barcelona—Messi stressed that Argentina's job in the final would be to stop him from producing his best performance, noting that Spain possess several other outstanding players as well.
The exchange further fueled excitement ahead of the Argentina-Spain showdown, with the resurfaced UNICEF photos becoming one of the defining storylines of the final. The images, taken during a 2007 charity calendar photoshoot after Yamal's family won a raffle, have been widely celebrated as one of football's most remarkable full-circle moments.
