Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden is facing auction due to unpaid income and wealth tax arrears totaling nearly ₹13.7 crore, including interest, the Income Tax Department told the Madras High Court. Following the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s death in 2016, her niece Deepa Jayakumar and nephew Deepak Jayakumar, declared legal heirs, were served notices.
Deepa has challenged the tax demand in court, while Deepak is paying his share in instalments, though a majority of the dues remain unpaid. The Madras High Court is scheduled to hear the case again soon.

A Bengaluru man lost his ₹1.2 crore flat after missing just three EMIs, despite paying for eight years. Rajesh’s story highlights the vulnerability of India’s middle class, where job loss can erase years of savings and dreams. Under the SARFAESI Act, banks can classify loans as NPAs after 90 days of missed payments and auction properties quickly. Experts warn this legal system is emotionally devastating, raising questions about financial planning, emergency cushions, and whether the EMI-driven property market truly builds wealth. Millions of salaried Indians could face similar risks if sudden layoffs occur.

The Supreme Court has ruled that individuals who convert from Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism to another religion cannot retain Scheduled Caste status. The two-judge bench, led by Justice P K Mishra, upheld the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s 2025 verdict, citing the Constitution (Scheduled Caste) Order, 1950. The court clarified that conversion automatically ends SC membership, and no constitutional or statutory benefits can be claimed. The case involved Pastor Chintada Anand Paul, who continued practicing Christianity for over a decade. The bench noted that the caste system is not recognized in Christianity, and protections under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act do not apply to converts.

After weeks of speculation and backroom discussions over possible constituencies, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai has not been included in the party’s candidate list for the 2026 Assembly elections. Sources indicated that Annamalai had sought the Coimbatore North seat, while discussions were also held around Tiruppur North.
However, neither option materialised in the final list. Annamalai has now said he will focus on campaigning for BJP candidates across the state.

Oracle, which laid off over 3,000 employees last year, is reportedly planning fresh waves of layoffs as it ramps up massive investments in AI infrastructure and data centres. The cuts may begin this month and could affect several divisions, targeting roles expected to become redundant with AI adoption.
Industry estimates indicate Oracle’s partnership with OpenAI may involve up to $300 billion in long-term investments, requiring extensive computing infrastructure and large data centres. The layoffs aim to reduce operational costs and free up cash for these AI projects.
The trend isn’t limited to Oracle: Morgan Stanley also announced 2,500 job cuts despite strong 2025 performance. Experts warn that as AI adoption grows, thousands of traditional roles worldwide may face uncertainty, raising crucial questions about the future of work.

Just days before Kerala votes on April 9, the Centre’s Foreign Contribution Amendment Bill, 2026, has ignited a political storm. The law allows the government to take control of funds and assets if an organisation loses its FCRA licence. While the government claims it’s to stop misuse of foreign money, in Kerala, schools, hospitals, and minority-run institutions feel under threat. Opposition leaders, including Pinarayi Vijayan and Rahul Gandhi, see political targeting, while BJP insists the law is fair. Experts discuss how this law could impact Kerala’s Christian community and BJP’s electoral strategy.

The LPG shortage triggered by disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz is severely impacting Karnataka’s economy. At least 25 Bengaluru eateries have shut down, while others have switched to wood-fired ovens or induction stoves, curtailing menus and raising food prices.
The hotel industry has lost over ₹100 crore in five days, and many kitchens are struggling to operate with mandatory cylinder requirements. Black market LPG prices have soared to Rs 3,000–5,000 per cylinder, forcing restaurants to hike meal costs or lay off workers.
Even farmers in Kolar are feeling the effects, with vegetable orders down nearly 60% due to reduced demand from urban kitchens. From hotels to markets, the crisis shows how LPG disruptions are cascading across India’s real economy.

Kerala creates history by becoming the first state in India to offer completely free education up to the undergraduate level. In the State Budget 2026–27, Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal announced that Arts and Science degree courses in government and aided colleges will now be free, extending free education beyond Class 12 for the first time.
The budget also brings accident insurance for students from Classes 1 to 12, higher funding for universities, scholarships and fellowships including PhD support, with an allocation of ₹38.76 crore. A new “Global School” focusing on modern technology, vocational education and future skills has also been proposed, along with stronger links between research institutions and local bodies.
To remove accommodation hurdles, a public hostel will be launched, while ₹259.09 crore has been allocated to strengthen university activities. With a strong focus on education, welfare and social security, is Kerala setting a new benchmark for higher education in India?

Airfares from India are set to rise as airlines introduce fuel surcharges amid escalating tensions in the Middle East that have sharply pushed up aviation fuel prices. Leading carriers Air India and IndiGo said the move has become necessary as aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which accounts for nearly 40% of airline operating costs, has surged due to supply disruptions linked to the regional crisis.
Air India will roll out the surcharge in phases, starting with ₹399 on domestic and SAARC routes, about ₹830 for Middle East flights, ₹5,000 for Southeast Asia, ₹7,500 for Africa, ₹10,400 for Europe, and roughly ₹16,600 for North America and Australia. IndiGo will introduce its fuel charge from March 14, adding ₹425 on domestic routes, ₹900 for Middle East flights, ₹1,800 for Southeast Asia and Africa, and ₹2,300 for Europe. The airlines said the charges will apply only to new bookings and are intended to absorb part of the sudden spike in fuel costs while avoiding flight cancellations or steep fare hikes.

Oracle has reportedly begun a massive round of layoffs across its global operations, with reports suggesting that up to 30,000 jobs could be cut worldwide and India among the worst-hit markets. Employees were allegedly informed via early morning emails around 6 AM that their roles had been eliminated, with messages stating, “today is your last working day,” leaving many shocked by the sudden and impersonal nature of the move. The company has described the layoffs as part of an “organisational change,” adding that affected staff may receive severance packages or opt for compensation-linked voluntary exits.
The layoffs are reportedly tied to Oracle’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure, as it seeks to compete with global giants like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Reports indicate that around 12,000 employees in India alone have been impacted, with multiple verticals including cloud, sales, customer success and NetSuite affected. The development comes amid broader pressure on the tech industry, where companies are increasingly prioritising AI-driven investments and cost-cutting, raising concerns about job stability in an evolving, AI-first global economy.

Starting the new academic session, the Delhi government has issued strict directives for private schools, banning the practice of forcing students and parents to buy books, uniforms, or stationery from specific vendors. Schools must now provide transparent class-wise lists, display them publicly, and suggest at least five nearby shops. With strict action promised against violators, the move aims to reduce financial burden on parents and improve accountability in schools.
