Last week, the @ausvols celebrated the contributions of our Australian-based partners and Victorian-based alumni in Naarm/Melbourne. The event celebrated stories, collaboration, the power of new and existing connections and marked the beginning of the International Year of Volunteering and 75 years of AVI.
Joined in person by our Regional Directors, Australian organisations that have supported partner organisations through the program and past volunteers who have shared their skills and expertise across their regions.
Thanks to all guest speakers including Stacie Piper from Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, Carla Mira from Trinh Foundation Australia, Jack Nugent and Ella Guthrie from Engineers Without Borders Australia, and East Asia Regional Director, David Sharman-Selvidge.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it a memorable evening of sharing stories and celebrating connections 💛

What is the First Five?
It is a chance to step forward and help shape what happens next in your community. You will develop your own capability in facilitation and bring others with you on your leadership journey. You will be part of a group that works together on real challenges facing rural, regional and remote Australia.
Here is what that looks like:
✔️ Time to grow your capability: Up to 15 days of professional development, including a 3-day National Impact Forum in Mildura
✔️ Support from experienced facilitators: Individual and group coaching with people who understand facilitation in practice and in community
✔️ A role in your community: Use what you build to help deliver a Networked Leadership Program locally and bring people together around what matters
✔️ A seat at the table: Contribute to the conversations that strengthen local networks and social infrastructure for the future
✔️ Tools you can use straight away: Access practical frameworks, resources and ongoing connection to the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (ARLF) network
✔️ No cost to attend: Travel and accommodation for in-person sessions are covered
This is not something to watch from the sidelines. It is something to be part of.

A great night to kick off the 54th Annual ICPA WA State Conference.
The ABSA Sundowner brought together conference attendees from across regional and remote Western Australia all in one room.
Because before the conversations, the advocacy and the outcomes… it starts with connection.
Faces to names.
Stories to voices.
Communities coming together.
A powerful reminder that strong relationships are at the heart of supporting rural and remote education.

Out and about today as part of our Strategic Planning workshop, visiting facilities across WA to learn what’s working well in other communities.
First stop: City of Wanneroo – Lansdale Library & Youth Innovation Hub.
An impressive, inclusive space featuring hirable rooms, a recording studio, commercial kitchen, library, and change facilities… all designed to bring community together.
With a population of 120k+, there’s plenty to take inspiration from, while staying grounded in what’s right for our own community.
🌍 Some moments remind you exactly why this work matters.
Yesterday's Global Meet Up with the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence brought together over 70 people from one end of the globe to the other: 7am in Sydney, 9pm in Johannesburg, and 4pm on the US East Coast, all showing up with open hearts and a shared purpose.
Fran and Marcela facilitated a gathering that felt less like a meeting and more like a reunion, even for people meeting for the very first time. 💛
Darla set the tone beautifully with her welcome. Our Working Groups shared the meaningful work happening across regions. And the breakout sessions? Pure magic. Strangers becoming colleagues, colleagues becoming community.
But the highlight? The moment so many of us unmuted and sang together:
🎵 "What the world needs now is love, sweet love..." by Dionne Warwick
Because that's exactly what intercultural competence is. It's not just a framework or a skill set. It's the belief that every person deserves to feel at home, safe, and at peace, wherever in the world they are.
Watch the recap. Share it with someone who was there, or someone who needs a reminder that this community exists. 🌐

WA March 2026 Invitation Round Update 📊
Some occupations saw lower invitation points compared to February — including nurses, social workers, chefs and engineers.
Example changes:
• Registered Nurses nec(sched 1): 85 → 75
• Social Workers(sched 1): 85 → 75
• Civil Engineers(sched 2): 100 → 90
• Pastrycook(sched 2): 90 → 80
This shows how WA invitation thresholds can move depending on labour demand and EOI rankings.
Please Note: the published points are simply the last invited score, not a guaranteed invitation.
