Happy Sea Otter Awareness Week!
To kick off the week, we’re sharing some clips of sea otter Quint. Quint is a rescued sea otter who was found as a pup off the coast of California. Unfortunately, his mother was not found. After receiving veterinary treatment and support at a rescue center, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determined he was not a candidate to be released back to the ocean and placed Quint in our care when he was about six months old.

POV: your dog has more paperwork to travel than you do ✈️🐶📋
Health certificates aren’t just a formality! Depending on where your dog is traveling, they may need a veterinary exam, proof of vaccines, a microchip, specific parasite treatments, and/or additional documentation…and the requirements can vary by destination and airline.
Some international destinations require planning weeks to MONTHS in advance, so please don’t wait until the night before your flight to call your vet 😅
Save this for your next trip with your pup! 🐾🌎

When the orphaned walrus calf first arrived at the ASLC, everything was new.
This video was taken just after his veterinary admit exam, as he began getting to know the humans who would continue his around the clock care. With patience, quiet reassurance and plenty of calm energy, he slowly began approaching ASLC veterinarian Dr. Emm for the physical contact and social interaction that an orphaned young walrus needs. A very special first moment in his care!
Allowing him to choose close contact and not overstimulating him is an important part in building a trusting relationship.
You may be wondering… why is access to physical contact and social interaction important for a young orphaned walrus?
The care regimen for orphaned Pacific walruses in rehabilitation is more demanding and hands on than for many other marine mammals. The mother and calf bond of the Pacific walrus is known as one of the longest and strongest among pinnipeds, with calves typically remaining with their mothers for one to two years. As highly social animals, close physical contact with their mother and other walruses is an important part of a calf’s early life. When a calf is orphaned, human caregivers can serve as surrogates under the direction of authorized wildlife response and veterinary professionals, remaining with the calf around the clock to provide physical contact, social interaction, feeding support and veterinary care as needed. This type of intervention requires specialized expertise and should only take place as part of an authorized response.
Keeps the birds’ stress low, makes the vet team able to do their jobs easier, and gives me that personal satisfaction when they tell me they’re the best behaved birds they see all year 🤌

中獸醫. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine has developed alongside Chinese medicine, sharing the same philosophical foundation of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, meridians, and the balance of the body’s vital energy.
Generations of veterinary practitioners adapted these principles to different animal species, creating a complete system of diagnosis and treatment rooted in Chinese medical tradition.
Acupuncture and moxibustion remain among the most recognizable techniques within this lineage. Every treatment is adapted to the unique anatomy of each animal while following the same philosophy of supporting balance, encouraging the movement of Qi, and working with the body’s natural ability to regulate itself.
Across China, this tradition continues to be practiced by specialized veterinary professionals, preserving a medical heritage that has cared for both people and animals through the centuries.
In Chinese tradition, healing extends across all living beings.
