The Imperial Garden (Yuhuayuan) of the Forbidden City, was created in 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and served as a private retreat for the imperial family. Unlike the ceremonial areas of the Forbidden City, this was a private, leisurely space for the imperial family to read, rest, and worship.
As a masterpiece of Chinese garden design, it features over 20 unique pavilions, temples, and halls, alongside ancient trees and colorful stone-paved paths, serving as a tranquil space for emperors and empresses.
The garden is famous for its dense forests of ancient cypresses, centuries-old pines, bamboo, and decorative rock formations.
In the center of the garden is Dui Xiu Shan (Gathering Beauty Hill), a small artificial hill with a cave and a viewing pavilion (Yujingyuan) on top, located in the northeast corner.
👉Fun Fact: Did you know the pebble paths here are made of thousands of tiny stones forming over 900 different patterns? Each one is a symbol of luck and long life.

The Temple of Heaven is one of Beijing’s most extraordinary historic landmarks. Built in the 15th century, it was where emperors once prayed for good harvests, and today it stands as a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty architecture.
Surrounded by peaceful parkland, the complex offers a glimpse into both imperial history and daily Beijing life, with locals gathering each morning for tai chi and music.
Visiting early allows you to experience the temple’s architecture, cultural traditions, and peaceful atmosphere before the city fully awakens.

We recently visited the Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, one of Beijing’s most remarkable cultural landmarks. Walking through its grand gates and expansive courtyards offers a powerful sense of China’s imperial past, where Ming and Qing emperors once ruled for nearly five centuries.
From the striking symmetry of the palace architecture to the intricate details found in ancient artefacts, ceramics and paintings, every corner reveals another layer of history. The scale alone is extraordinary, with nearly 1,000 preserved buildings spread across the vast complex.
Adding the Forbidden City to a Beijing itinerary is essential. It pairs perfectly with nearby Tiananmen Square and Jingshan Park, where panoramic views over the palace rooftops provide a memorable perspective of the city.
