Making Washi Paper in Japan 📃🇯🇵 This hands-on papermaking experience at Ozu Washi Tokyo was such a highlight! The paper pulp, made from Kozo trees, goes through an incredible process before it finally reaches the vat (the "Sukibune"). Learning how to pull sheets of paper using a "Sugeta" was so interesting, with several layers being pulled, to make just one sheet! I loved the Japanese concept of washi paper have 3 features & qualities: 👉 Strength 👉 Tenderness 👉 Warmth Ozu Washi is a company with over 370 years of tradition from the Edo era. The history and delicacy of washi paper has me captivated and inspired! I want to learn more! The next Japan trip I really want to go to the Washi Paper town in Japan = Echizen Washi Village! Who want to join? #washipaper #papermaking #japan #japanexperience #japantodo #ozuwashi #howtomakepaper #japanpaper #washi #experience #travel

[Making of Kinshi] 1: urushi on washi The gold thread, key material for our bags is made of three Japanese traditional materials: washi paper, urushi lacquer and gold leaves. Here, urushi lacquer works as the glue to bond the paper and gold leaves. I’ve already mentioned that I’m working on a new body of work, which is based on retrieved Washi paper and previously unfinished, and destroyed pieces. Here’s a first glimpse! – The series will be called FRAGMENTATIONS and will feature three different types of work, all based on reclaimed and reworked pieces: * Small sized art, based on collages of selected fragments, or occasionally also of a single fragment; all on paper with a mat. * Medium sized collages of re-combined fragments, mounted on wood panels. And … * Big sized works on wood panels that are created with re-assembled and reworked fragments (bits and pieces), like the one shown in this video. – So stay tuned more is in the making! – – #wip #artprocessvideo by #inkartist #thothadan showing the #artprocess of a new #artseries based on #retreived #washipaper #workinprogress #artproject

At Fibre Arts Take Two, we get to experience some of the most amazing places and meet extraordinary people, and we love nothing better than to share these with you. During filming for The Way of Wabi Sabi Collage with Donna Watson, we had the privilege of visiting Kurotani Washi, an 800-year-old paper mill and village in Ayabe-Shi, Kyoto, Japan. Here we saw first-hand how washi paper is processed, including making Kozo uniform, washing, obtaining, and beating the Kozo fibres. The highlight was seeing the paper-making process in the vats of paper pulp; overall, it was a mesmerising experience witnessing the labour of love that goes into every piece of paper and one that we will never forget. How is Kurotani Washi paper different from other Japanese washi papers you may have heard of? You won’t find any fancy machinery here; almost every process is still completed in the traditional way... by hand and using the life force of the river that runs through their village. Students of The Way of Wabi Sabi will enjoy an interview with Donna Watson and Mutsuko Yamashiro, the owner of the Kurotani Washi Cooperative, where you’ll learn more about this incredible cooperative and how they keep their tradition alive. If you’d like to know more about The Way of Wabi Sabi Collage take a look on our website (there is a link in our bio).
