Looking for a simple watercolor project? These loose watermelon slices are beginner-friendly, fun to paint and perfect for practicing wet-on-wet techniques.😍 ________ Journal by @pagesandpaintwithbre Paint by @schmincke_official Brushes by @polina.bright & @davinci_artistbrushes_official ________ Step-by-step guide 1️⃣ Paint a light pink triangle with a rounded bottom. While the paint is still wet, drop in a darker red to create natural texture and variation. Repeat this step until your page is filled with watermelon slices. 2️⃣ Add a few splatters for a loose and playful look, if you like. 💡For larger splatters, I load my brush with plenty of paint and gently squeeze the bristles with my fingers so larger drops fall onto the paper. For smaller splatters, I flick the brush using a quick tapping motion. ✨ Let it dry 3️⃣ Paint the rind using a fairly concentrated green along the bottom edge. While it’s still wet, soften the upper edge with a clean damp brush. Add a little more green along the lower edge if needed. 4️⃣ Paint the seeds using a dark brown color. I used a small round brush and simply pressed the tip onto the paper. This creates perfect little seed shapes with minimal effort. ✨ Let it dry 5️⃣ Using a dry brush, add a few white highlights to the watermelon flesh for a juicy look. Finish with tiny white highlights on the seeds as well. Just a few simple steps and you instantly get that beach feeling 🌊 Colors: - Aqua Green & Burnt Umber by @winsorandnewton - Lunar Blue by @danielsmithartistsmaterials - Bleed Proof White by @drphmartins Brushes by @polina.bright and @princetonbrush The materials are linked in my bio 😊 STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE 1️⃣ Paint the sand Paint the sand area, then add turquoise for the water and gently tap a little bit into the sand area so the transition feels soft and natural. Don’t overmix - just let the colors blend a little. While it’s still wet, drop in a darker blue where you want the water to look deeper. 2️⃣ Add salt Sprinkle salt into the water area. ✨ Let it dry Don’t use a hairdryer for this step. The salt effect needs time to work. 3️⃣ Soften the texture Once dry, gently remove the salt. Then use a clean damp brush to soften some of the salt textures if they feel too strong. ✨ Let it dry 4️⃣ Paint the foam Use white paint to draw a loose, organic shoreline. Then use a dry brush technique to create the foamy water texture. Keep it denser near the shoreline and looser toward the water. I added a little more foam on one side so it doesn’t look too even. 5️⃣ Add wet reflections Use a dry brush to add a little white to the sand to create a wet reflective look. 6️⃣ Add shadows Mix a shadow color using your dark blue and sandy brown. Add shadows along one side of the foam line. Decide where your light comes from and keep the shadows consistent. Then use a more diluted version of the same mix to add soft, irregular shadows into the white foam. Also add brown shadows to the sand covered by water, and a few darker shadows in the water near the foam for more depth. I loved painting these bubbles, because at first they look super complicated… but once you break them down step by step, they’re actually much easier than they seem. ☺️ Step-by-step guide: 1️⃣ Paint the background Wet your paper evenly so it’s fully damp, but without puddles. Start with a light turquoise and paint vertical strokes from top to bottom to create the direction of the light rays. Begin light at the top, gradually get darker, and use a deep, highly pigmented blue at the bottom for depth. 2️⃣ Lift the light rays While still wet, rinse your brush well, dry it on a cloth, and lift out the paint to create light rays. Clean and dry the brush before each stroke for crisp, glowing lines. ✨ Let it dry completely. 3️⃣ Paint the water texture With soft blue tones, paint loose ripple shapes to suggest the water surface. Keep them finer near the top and broader lower down. In the bottom third, glaze over with a darker blue to add even more depth. Don’t overthink this step - loose and imperfect brushstrokes look best. ✨ Let it dry completely. 4️⃣ Sketch the bubbles Sketch the bubble shapes using a light blue tone. Keep them irregular and playful - some long, some round, some tiny, some oddly shaped, and some overlapping. 5️⃣ Paint the bubbles For each bubble, wet the shape first, then drop in different blue tones. Leave parts unpainted, and make the lower areas slightly darker for dimension. 6️⃣ Add highlights While still damp, add tiny highlights with white gouache or Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White. ‼️ Important: Keep the bubbles near the top lighter, and the lower bubbles darker to match the light source. 7️⃣ Add finishing touches Add white splatters for extra movement and smaller bubbles. which one do you prefer? the first painting took me 10+ hours (because i used to overthink every decision i made) and the recent one took 2 hours in no way saying the first one is bad but i’m a lot happier with how my style has gotten more loose and painterly. i still do enjoy an ink and wash but prefer that more for a quick sketch now #artprogress #watercolour #urbansketch
