Think creating a beautiful, waterwise landscape is only for experienced gardeners? Think again! 🌱
With no previous landscaping experience, this homeowner transformed her entire yard herself using free resources from Localscapes and @conservationgardenpark.
She wanted something more vibrant than a traditional lawn—something full of color, texture, and purpose. Today, a flowing river of red creeping thyme creates a stunning focal point (and a favorite spot for buzzing bees 🐝), while providing year-round interest and habitat for pollinators.
Her entire yard reflects Localscapes principles, with in-line drip irrigation, inviting pathways, thoughtfully selected plants, and plenty of lessons learned along the way. Her advice? Start small. Choose a few plants you love, scatter them throughout your landscape, and let the process teach you.
She never expected to learn so much about plants, or to have neighbors regularly stop by in awe of her yard! Since planting in 2023, she has continued to share what she’s learned, inspiring neighbors and others in her community to rethink what’s possible. 💚
Feeling inspired? Explore our free resources and landscape designs to see how you can transform your yard too!

Today’s water-wise tip is all about sprinklers. Now that the weather is changing it’s a good time to check if your sprinkler system is in working order. Be sure to periodically check sprinklers for any overspray, broken sprinklers, or puddling as those are signs that water is being wasted. Overspray is when water overshoots the grass and hits things that shouldn’t be watered like a fence or concrete path. A few adjustments can make a huge difference!

You don’t need a lot of water to have a beautiful, vibrant yard. 🌿
Baja fairy dusters are just one of the many options for adding more green and a pop of color to your landscape nearly year-round.
They attract hummingbirds, are low-maintenance, and do well in full sun. ☀️

Heatwaves can be tough on our gardens... but watering smarter makes all the difference. 🌞💧
I’ve moved my handmade terracotta ollas from my vegetable beds into my tomato and cucumber planters to help keep them hydrated during this hot spell.
Simply fill the olla with water, and it slowly releases moisture into the surrounding soil as the plants need it. Less water is lost to evaporation, and the roots receive a steady supply throughout the day.
It’s one of my favourite ways to help plants cope during the summer.
Do you use ollas in your garden, or is this the first time you’ve come across them? 🌿

Dr. Waterwise paid a visit to Linton Elementary to help students learn about their everyday water habits 💧 Water conservation starts with awareness!
Go easy with the hose, Bob! 💦
Outdoor water use accounts for a hefty percentage of the average home’s water use. Here are some handy hints to help save you water, and money, this summer:
🔫 Add a trigger nozzle to your hose before you wash your car or tend to your garden. For such a small, budget-friendly device, it really makes a big difference in how much water you use.
☀️ Water when the sun is low, before 10am or after 4pm. You’ll reduce water loss through evaporation - and your plants will thank you.
🪴 Use mulch to keep your garden happy - it can make your garden more efficient by reducing soil evaporation by up to 70 per cent.
🏊♀️ Using a pool cover can reduce evaporation between 40-90%. Use a roller to easily spread and remove it when needed.
🚘 When washing your car at home, use a bucket in the front yard to reduce waste. Wash your car on the lawn so that you water and fertilise the grass at the same time.
