Wheel Builders and Bike Mechanics are two different types of people (🤠 vs 🤓) The main difference between a wheel builder and a bike mechanic is time. I can build a wheel, but it takes me a day or so. My partner can build a wheel from scratch in an hour! For some people, it just clicks. It's a calm, steady, and repetitive task that requires laser focus. If you lose track of anything, you'll end up with a brand new piece of modern art 🎨 In a former life, my partner used to do a lot of guitar stringing, which is a transferrable skill and uses very similar techniques. I've often thought that people who are good at knitting would also make good wheel builders. A repetitive task, following a pattern, gauges and tensions - very similar indeed. (I am a keen knitter for the record, shout out to Anna at Wild and Woolly in Clapton for my yarn fix). I have passed on this holy document to the mechanics here at LBK, and @silvierit took to it like a duck to water - she's now teaching our wheel building series. There are lots of jobs that we love doing when it comes to bicycle mechanic, but that task that seems to be beloved unanimously, is wheel building. It’s one of those things, that once you learn how to perform, it can take you into this quest to self improvement. Sure you can build a good wheel early on, but you can spend years or even a lifetime improving the process and the result. Most riders never see this part of a wheel build. Stress relieving the spokes isn't about making them tighter—it's about allowing the spokes, nipples, and hub to fully seat before the final tension and true. Skipping this step can leave hidden stresses in the wheel that reveal themselves on the trail, meaning more frequent truing later. It's one of those little details that separates a carefully hand-built wheel from one that's simply assembled. building wheels 02 redemption I hope… To fix my mistakes building my wheels I choose to rebuild them fully. I choose the wrong spokes and switched them out. Well it happens but after building each of those wheels approximately 4-5 times I feel pretty confident that I learned a lot in the process. This build overall already teaches me a lot from framebuilding with @leovelo_frameworks , checking out new finishes for steel, also learned quite a bit of editing while I worked on the videos and now wheel building. Learning is a hike not a race. PS: my guess is the tube popped out because there was 0 air in there before I started pumping both times so the tire sat pretty flat on the ground and went beside the rim. Totally a mistake on me @ultradynamico still makes some awesome tires. #wheelbuilding #atb #bikebuild #mechanic #steelisreal
