Newborn fawns are naive and uncoordinated, and the act of foraging unavoidably draws attention; if the fawn is with her if they are detected she instantly becomes the prime target. It's hard enough for the mom to escape predators sometimes, for her baby to make it out of a flight situation without getting run down and mulched would be some sort of miracle. Now, this strategy is obviously not without its flaws. Leaving her behind isn’t 100% safe either, however fawns are scentless, they are usually left in tall grass, they instinctively know to stay completely still and they can lower their heart rate to avoid detection even further.
