MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES COMMEMORATES WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY BY SIGNING 6 HISTORIC NATIONAL COMMITMENTS 💚 The Ministry of Health and Social Services today commemorated World Mental Health Day 2026 at the Windhoek Central Hospital Mental Health Care Unit under the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.” Her Excellency Lucia Witbooi, Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, delivered the keynote address. This year, the Ministry intentionally chose a different approach. Instead of the usual formal speeches, the day centred on listening to patients, asking what changes they would like to see in mental health care in Namibia and, critically, signing six historic national commitments to strengthen mental health services. In 2024/25, Namibia recorded 102,900 mental health service contacts across the health system, underscoring the need to strengthen mental health services now more than ever. The Mental Health Bill was recently passed by the National Assembly and subsequently by the National Council. However, legislation must translate into tangible benefits for every Namibian. Otherwise, it remains merely a document. The Namibia National Mental Health Commitment of 2026 is a 10-year commitment to the people of Namibia. It was signed today by the Minister of Health and Social Services and witnessed by the Vice President of the Republic of Namibia. In her keynote address, the Vice President remarked that the Namibia National Mental Health Commitment of 2026 is the action arm of the Mental Health Bill. With the Bill now awaiting gazetting as an act, she emphasised that there is no better time to begin putting these commitments into action. #YourHealthOurPriority
